Hobbs trench coat - olive green or black?

I tried on this olive green trench coat Link
and loved it, but it’s a coat I expect to wear everyday to work - I’m not sure the colour will match most of my work summer wardrobe (mainly floral dresses in a variety of colours)

The black might be more practical but also doesn’t seem very summery ?

The other one is navy, not black. I'd go for that one. Olive green is a trend and unless it is a colour you gravitate towards anyway and it matches the rest of your wardrobe I would go for navy unless there is a style in beige/camel you like.

Shineyorange · 22/04/2025 12:56

it was only in black or green in the shop, but there seems to be navy and beige online too

I bought a near identical one in M&S called a “car coat” (can’t link as my iPad goes straight to their app for some reason) in navy, which is ideal for summer. I do like the Hobbs one in olive green, but I wear a lot of green.

Olive green isn’t a trend! It’s a neutral.

Comefromaway · 22/04/2025 13:21

Neutrals can be trends. Olive is one of the current ones. The key is to identify those trends which the OP will wear for years to come and which fit with her existing style/wardrobe.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 22/04/2025 13:32

Black is a Winter colour and Olive is Autumn, you can’t suit both OP.
Buy a coat in a colour that suits you, regardless of trends.

I have a Saskia trench from Hobbs in olive that I bought around 2018 or 2019. It's a brilliant colour, so versatile and goes with so much of my wardrobe - I tend to go for a lot of neutrals and light or dusty pinks. I've had a period of weight gain where it hasn't fit me for a while and I've pined for it (but in its absence have worn various khaki coats and jackets so stuck to a similar colour) and now I'm just about to fit back into it I can't wait to wear it again.

@FormerlySpeckledyHen I haven't had my colours done but think I'm a warm spring which can also borrow some colours from warm autumn I think - olive definitely suits me. My brutally honest 10 year old has banned me from lime green though.

LittleBearPad · 22/04/2025 13:40

The Olive is lovely. The navy is likely to be more useful though. How ‘expensive’ is this for you

Shineyorange · 22/04/2025 14:09

Thanks all for your feedback.

The coat comes in 4 colours in seems - olive green, black, navy and beige.

I’m not bothered about trends, but I don’t want to look hideously mismatched if I go for the green (which suited me colour-wise more than the black)

It’s £200, so I would want to wear it lots!

I beg to differ! Black and olive green are two of the absolute best colours on me (red hair/pale skin).

What’s the point in a raincoat that doesn’t keep out the rain properly? I’d look elsewhere…

It's designed to be a smart coat that looks nice and is shower resistant if you get caught short on the way to work, not something you wear to walk miles in the pouring rain.

TizerorFizz · 24/04/2025 21:03

@Shineyorange Hobbs do loads of sales! I’d go and look at the M&S ones! Around 1/3 the price. Navy and stone options and one or two longer designs look great too.

Go for olive - it’ll go with everything
