Help me find handbag for funeral

Maria1982 · 18/04/2025 16:23

I am going to funeral of a close relative in a fortnight. My usual handbags are the wrong colour.
can you help me find something, I guess black? Stylish. Big enough to fit a couple of nappies and wet nappies (so I don’t need to carry a nappy bag as well) as well as my usual bits and pieces. preferably something with a shoulder strap, not just clutch.
budget up to £150 ish but open to cheaper!

I needed a bag for a funeral last year and was surprised to find one in Primark that did the job for about £12. Not the best, but fitted in with what I was wearing and didn't look out of place.

Help me find handbag for funeral
skipdiddyskip · 19/04/2025 03:38

I went to a funeral recently and it was a mix if people who dressed appropriately and then there were a few people who even wore leggings and tops - all black - but noticeably athleisure, and no one batted an eyelid. Honestly, I don’t think people will mind. If you want to buy a nice new handbag, though, I’d try John Lewis.

What on earth?? I know no one will care, but I was taught that it shows respect to dress appropriately. I’m not going to turn up with a red handbag!
what an unhelpful post …

Actually it isn’t unhelpful but the truth. No one cares anymore and no one will think a red handbag is disrespectful. Are you just looking for an excuse to buy a new bag?

If it’s just a one off bag OP then don’t discount Primark. They’ve got some black bags at the moment big enough for what you need for about £12. I have one for work and it’s lasted me about a year. Only now showing signs of scruffiness.

Obvnotthegolden · 19/04/2025 09:36

You honestly don't need to buy a new bag for a funeral. We recently lost my dfil and I actually have no idea what people wore, what handbags they carried. The whole funeral was a blur, I wasn't focused at all on others clothes. I'm sure I saw someone in a white shirt and light grey trousers but I didn't think anything of it.

However, you will definitely find a mid sized black bag in m&s, next or even Sainsbury's, or go for John Lewis for someone expensive.

I think they currently have Le Pliage dupes, they would work well if the OP wouldn't get enough use out of a proper one.

this will be the kind of sensible in this case response you’ll get here so take it or leave it 🤷🏽‍♀️ “dressing respectfully” really has nothing to do with a necessary nappy bag. sorry for your loss

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 19/04/2025 13:06

If black isn’t a colour of bag you’d use usually, I’d pop into the nearest supermarket first and see if there’s anything you can use to get through the day. Otherwise M&S usually have black work bags. If you have any dark coloured bags already, eg dark brown or navy, I would suggest just using that, but if you only have light/bright coloured bags I can see why you’d want to get something new.

sorry for your loss.

I agree with a black longchamp le pliage . Smart , well made , durable and will be useful afterwards .

Maria1982 · 19/04/2025 21:28

Hello everyone

Thank you to all who made helpful suggestions (le Pliage is a good shout). And thank you for the expressions of condolences, I wasn’t expecting that and am touched.

Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned the funeral, and just asked for help finding a dark coloured bag. I wasn’t expecting all the opinions! I take onboard what people are saying about funerals being less formal these days, and how no one will care/notice. Let’s just call it my personal preference then, since that’s what it is.

I ended up buying a navy Radley shoulder bag when in town this morning, fairly impulsively. Over my original budget, it’s been years since I bought a handbag and am clearly out of touch with prices. It’s nice and I should get lots of use out of it.

thanks, this does look nice. In the end I went for something I could see in person before buying, rather than online …

I’ll put it down to you being upset about the funeral but your response to the post was disproportionate and aggressive
