Im not 100% sure what this should look like and wonder if my dress (similar to this) isn’t formal enough?

and what jacket would go over this?

Ive a long public transport journey before and unable to change outfits so need to be comfortable and not creasable too!
Thoughts?

That is quite a formal dress , so yes I think so.

I'm not sure I'd wear a jacket. I would go more for a formal duster style coat (if that's not a contradiction in terms) worn open over the dress. I have this linen coat dress which I only ever wear as a coat- often over dresses not dissimilar

Will you actually need a jacket? I don't think a jacket would work with that dress.

And yes it's formal enough.

I’m worried I may get chilly on the journey and walking to the event, would a thin wool coat work similar shape to the duster @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle?
What about a hat or unnecessary?

Yes, a light wool coat, same shape would work.

Re hat- unless it's a Royal garden party or the dressed up days at the races, probably not essential but without knowing the specific event I can't say definitely. Can you ask?

This sort of shape left unbottoned and no belt
John Lewis coat

Max Mara
Also unbottoned and no belt.

Pricey but exactly right shape

I wouldn't wear boots for this occasion. I think boots almost always "dress down" dresses. That's quite a casual boot. I don't wear heels. I would wear patent or metallic ballet pumps. Pretty Ballerina and Dune and I'm sure others do very dressy flats.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 18/04/2025 12:38

When you said morning suit formal my mind went straight to the likes of Royal Ascot and weddings. And that dress looks like something you'd see there.

A (big shapeless) wool coat would look so wrong with a lovely dress like that. Depending on the time of year, you may not need a coat. If you really think you'll be cold I would go more with a jacket so you can show off the dress.

And definitely not boots, not for a formal event.

You need to be more specific with the event though.

Is it full on morning suit? Are the men wearing top hats and specific coloured waistcoats ? If they are, then yes to a hat. If not then it's really up to you.

Frauhousemouse · 18/04/2025 12:48

It’s a royal church service but not a royal wedding. I think it will be rather conservative and the men are requested to wear dark morning suits with medals. It’s this week and the weather is so up and down!

That's a lovely dress, but I have those boots in he black. They are not dress boots or for a formal occasion.
There are loads of lovely flats out there.

That's a difficult dress to find a jacket for and definitely not an MN "blazer" A cropped, no longer than waist length boxy, not fitted jacket would work. I disagree about coats- I think the coats I posted, especially the Max Mara, in light colours worn loose and open will work.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/04/2025 13:00

This is a good example of wearing a coat and showing off a dress.

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle great! I have a coat that works with your advice and I’ll remember to keep it open.
Shoes wise- definitely not boots? I have some open toes sandles with a slight block heel- but do think I’ll be cold on the journey and Thurs not ever so comfy.
I detest ballet pumps sorry!

Definitely not boots. I'm not keen on open toed sandals. Theresa May's outfit would have looked less effective and less smart with open toes. Closed toe with low heel
Dune will have similar but cheaper.
