Dress for celebration plus and tall

Ideally, looking for a nice or special
dress for a celebration would even consider a skirt and top (that looks like a dress or waistcoat and trousers if they fit well and are long enough).

I am 5’10’ size 20 so tall and plus sized.

I have tried the long empire line dresses and they don’t look good on me. Thinking maybe midi or midaxi length (in my fifties) with short sleeves any suggestions. I have searched on Next, John Lewis, Debenhams, TK Max, Phase8, Jigsaw, Mint Velvet, M & S, Monsoon, Asos, Never Fully Dresses and One Hundred Stars etc etc. Am I missing anything or anywhere?

Thanks no I haven’t tried them for a couple of years as I was so disappointed, with the overall quality, cheap material used, bad finish and the overall fit (some items were absolutely massive, others would be far too long on anyone under 6’4’ and others the waist was far too high and in the wrong place for someone tall).

Yes, someone suggested them but sadly the empire line style whilst meant to be flattering for plus size makes me look heavily pregnant and does absolutely nothing for me.

Have you looked here?

Rixo? I feel your pain. There's definitely space on the market for decent tall clothes that go to larger sizes. Marina Rinaldi I find frumpy and over priced. LTS quality is often awful.

Boden have a few gems too.

Hi was just about to post same question as I am same size and height. Any joy finding something?

Ayeayeaye25 · 22/04/2025 20:26

Not really I found a dress in TK Max and another in John Lewis that fit and could be accessorised to work but I don’t absolutely love either of them.

Hope & Ivy have a few nice dresses, I personally have the Hazel and I also like the Blake. Karen Mullen? Marina Ranaldi? Hobbs, Joules at a push.

I was in TU yesterday and saw this co-ord, and really liked it (especially in person!)

@xmasdealhunter love that suit would need to try on.

@crinkletits I think Hope & Ivy do a lot of polyester fabrics which isn’t my thing. I like the look of some of the dresses but the ones I like aren’t in stock. I have checked Karen Millen and Hobbs but couldn’t see anything I liked in my size.

Then it is the shoes. I really need goldilocks shoes something that looks like I have made an effort, goes with several outfits, not too high (I don’t need the extra height and I am not comfortable tottering in heels I could do low cube heels or wedges at a push), something comfortable to stand in and walk about in for long periods in a size 8.

Someone recommended some bronze or gold shoes from ESSKA (possibly slightly too high) but out of stock in my size which I loved.

Whistles? Have to hunt through but I’m a similar height and dress size and have found well made dresses there.
