What to wear with barrel leg trousers

So I bought my first pair of barrel-leg trousers. I know I’m behind the trend and don’t care before anyone tells me. I know jeans shape is deeply contentious on S&B!

I've been waiting for the weather to wear them (they are green and a lightish material so felt a bit spring-like in my mind) and now it’s here I have no idea what to wear them with. I think it’s the combination of colour and shape that’s making me doubt myself.

Oh wise women of S&B, tell me what to wear on top - colour and shape. And shoe Choices. For a daytime look. I’m desperate to wear them today!

I’m size 12, 5’7” for reference.

Any kind of tucked in top. You need to emphasis your waist. If you leave the top baggy and over the trousers you'll look like a skittle! Belts are your friend. Also the top should be slimmer fit than the trousers.

Shoes will depend on where the trousers stop. Personally I think rolling the bottom looks wrong with wide legs. I wear mine with flat runners or flats.

Oh I bought a pair of green barrel leg trousers from Oliver bonas yesterday! Also late to the party! Can’t wait to get them on! I think I will wear a cream broderie top, with a tuck. I think any slimmer fit t shirt really would be ok. I’ve got cream sling back toms shoes, which are flat and seem to go quite well.
I’ve also got green Nikes with a pink tick that I might wear.

I’ve got a spring coloured striped cardi that would go as it’s got a green that matches through it or a sweater vest top.

I expect I’ll be told, by the end of this, that I’ll look like a clown in green barrel legs and yet I have not one shiny shit to give. I’m so excited.

So I’m tucking in?

Im keen not to wear runners as I’m just back from holiday and have nice brown feet! But I’ve not got my head in the summer shoe game yet!

Some good shoe tips here from Lydia Tomlinson. I always wear very fitted tops with barrel leg jeans otherwise I just look like a large barrel all over!

Nothing baggy. I’d wear something like a tank top / crop top / or plain tshirt (tucked in).

I saw someone wearing a waist coat with them and it looked good.

I’d look for some ideas on Pinterest.

Totally disagree with everything she says there. The boots look way better than any of the other footwear and the heels look ridiculous.

strappy wedges?

I wear close fitting vest tops from COS, or in winter, close fitting merino roll necks from Uniqlo.

I’m not a big fan of having the tops of my arms exposed. I’m just about to go and hsve a big try on. Helpfully, dp put new mirrored doors on the wardrobe in the dressing spare room yesterday.

I agree, literally any top will work as long as you tuck it in - you'll want to show off the waistband so you don't overwhelm your silhouette. I think shoes are key here to making the look work though, something structured that cuts through and tidies the shape so it looks elegant. These woven Mango flats are good for summer, or these sandals could also work. Something with a squared or slightly pointed toe should always look tidy

I think for mom jeans and barrel leg jeans, you need a very tight top or t shirt tucked in (she says, as she's currently sat wearing exactly that!)

Generally a fitted top (bodies are great) look the best with big jeans. Loving what @TheLongRider says, you don't want to look like a skittle ! 😂
