This top - yes or no?

I went to M&S yesterday and picked up some trousers to try on. Picked up the nearest top to it cos I was wearing a dress and wanted to see what the trousers looked like with a top.

And I ended up really liking the top! I think it's cos I've lost a lot of weight recently and I just felt good in it. And it's different to my usual style and felt a bit cute. I didn't buy it and got home wondering whether I should.

I sent DD a link it and her only response was "ugly" haha.

Before I go spend £35 on a top, do you agree with DD or should I go back and get it?

Pure Cotton Square neck Polka Dot Bow Top | M&S Collection | M&S

On laid-back days, this pure cotton top makes a charming choice. Regular fit, with a modern square neckline and an all-over polka-dot print to create an elegant look. Puffed short sleeves and bow detailing on the front add a romantic finish. M&S Col...

The bows are great!

WonderingWanda · 09/04/2025 12:38

I think the combo of puff sleeves and bows is too much. Lots of nice puff sleeve tops out there at the moment which might give a similar feel.

CandidExpert · 09/04/2025 12:38

Honestly, I think it's a bit daft and childish. The bows are too big, the placement is silly, with the puff sleeves there's a lot going on and it's going to date quickly and be hard to re-sell. I like unique, even quirky clothes, but this is hard to pull off past 21 imo.

DramaAlpaca · 09/04/2025 12:46

It's too short and I hate the bows.

nonmerci99 · 09/04/2025 12:49

I think it’s… a lot. And not in a good way!

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 09/04/2025 12:54

Twee. There's nicer tops out there imo.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 09/04/2025 13:17

Those bows are shocking!

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 09/04/2025 13:56

People re-sell things that cost £37 and that they’ve worn? Confused

PrettayGood · 09/04/2025 13:58

Awful.

Have you literally never heard of Vinted?!

Have you been living under a rock?

People sell Primark crap that they've worn for two years on there.

BarnacleBeasley · 09/04/2025 14:31

I have clearly turned into my mum, and possibly influenced by the fact that I live in the freezing north, but... how would you get a jacket or a cardigan on over that?

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 09/04/2025 15:17

I am aware of Vinted, obviously! But when an item of clothing costs £37 I’m amazed that anyone would advise against buying it because it would be hard to sell once you’re tired of it.

I admit I’ve never bought anything there. I’m a bit more Vestiaire!

dapsnotplimsolls · 09/04/2025 15:33

No. They look like an after-thought.

And I'm amazed that someone could be so short sighted that they wouldn't realise that for some people £37 isn't cheap (OP certainly doesn't seem to think so), and that many people no longer believe in fast, disposable fashion so might buy with reselling (either for themselves or charity) in mind. I've never bought on Vinted either fwiw!

YourPeppyLilacPoster · 09/04/2025 15:57

Not keen on the bows either, they're too big. Nice top apart from that. I'd wear it without the bows.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 09/04/2025 16:10

My idea of ‘not fast fashion’ is buying clothes with the hope they’ll last me for years, if not decades …

I’m always the poster on event dress threads insisting the OP should look for something that can be incorporated into her wardrobe, if not for everyday wear at least for whenever she wants to look particularly well dressed.

(Obviously you have no idea of my financial circumstances so it would be pointless to argue about that but) I would have thought the OP would be better advised to buy something she intends to wear until it falls apart, rather than planning to sell things on for pennies. Which would itself cost time and effort.

unsync · 09/04/2025 16:21

Not sure about the bows, they make me think of nipple tassels tbh, just not in the right place. Without them, it would be ok in a milkmaid / dirndl kind of way if that appeals to you.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 09/04/2025 17:22

Sorry The bows spoil it.

Britpopbaby · 09/04/2025 17:49

I saw that and it reminded me a lot of Sister Jane which is a label I really like. They have a short with diamanté detail which is also reminds me of Sister Jane. If you like it get it.

Just because I have mentioned it https://www.johnlewis.com/sister-jane-arnell-bow-ruffle-blouse-light-blue/p113047963

8misskitty8 · 09/04/2025 17:52

Those bows need to be removed. With them removed it’s still a bit Heidi looking, be better as a child’s top.
I can see it being in their next sale.

BeretRaspberry · 09/04/2025 18:12

I’m not keen on the bows but also it looks like it would be so uncomfortable. The fabric looks stiff and like it would just ride up somewhere and stay there.

If it was a different material and no bows, I’d probably like it.

EmmaStone · 09/04/2025 18:28

I like it. Wouldn't suit me, but I think the fact that you're still thinking about it speaks volumes. I thnk it would look great dressed down with jeans.

Outofthepan · 09/04/2025 22:26

Ignore the bow haters!

SkyOfficer · 09/04/2025 23:29

Thank you all, as much as I liked it I do think it'll end up being something that would spend more time in wardrobe. I've seen Sister Jane mentioned here previously but the name always put me off haha! But the links shared have been nice so will explore :)
