Vintage Mulberry: have I been had by eBay again?

I love secondhand shopping, partly for a bargain, but mainly for the ethics, so it really grates to think I've been sold a fake bag, even though I bought this little thing for it's old school, battered charm.

I bought this little 'Mulberry' bag on eBay and didn't notice from the pics that the metal tag has this ugly little trademark stamp on it. I can't see any indication anywhere online that genuine Mulberrys have ever had this included.

I've also noticed the stitching is a bit uneven which feels wrong to me and none of the hardware is stamped. Logo looks weird to me. Leather smells real.

I'd love anyone's thoughts as to whether I should raise this with the seller.

That’s a fake. How much did you pay for it?

charliehungerford · 08/04/2025 15:08

I don’t think that’s a fake. I have the exact same bag, probably about 30 years old now, which was purchased from mulberry. Mine has the same stamp on the brass tag and the same lining and ‘made in England’ label inside. Yours looks identical.

It’s genuine- as I understand it, the trade mark stamp is a serial number to keep note of in case it’s stolen

Tablefor4 · 08/04/2025 16:05

My, definitely original, bought from the shop, bag exactly of that make (and c 25 years old) has a number and logo stamp like that.

B1indEye · 08/04/2025 16:18

They do have serial numbers like that, I don't know if there's any way of checking an individual one.

You say it's eBay's fault, did they authenticate the bag? Can you raise some kind of query with them?

Ah thank you! That's really reassuring. Even the little circled 'R' by the Mulberry logo and the close together leaves in the logo itself?

It just looks pretty different from modern Mulberry, but it's clearly quite old so I was unsure as I appreciate brand standards evolve.

Ah thanks! In that case I hope it's genuine. The 'R' and the logo with no negative space around the leaves was particularly throwing me, but it's nice to know it might just be extra vintage 😅 it's a very solid bag for being 25 years old!

That’s 100 percent genuine

BIossomtoes · 08/04/2025 16:56

It definitely looks genuine to me.

Serenitestorm · 08/04/2025 17:02

It’s a real bag - I’ve no doubt whatsoever. Enjoy

misscockerspaniel · 08/04/2025 17:02

I don't have that bag but the tags are similar to Mulberry bags I bought back in the day, so another vote for genuine.

Vintagedoh · 08/04/2025 17:51

Ah awesome, thanks all! 🙂

Ignore me then. I just thought that quality of stitching had to be fake. Glad you’ve not been scammed OP.

SnaccidentsHappen · 08/04/2025 18:35

You can pay to have it authenticated. I used https://authentic8mybag.com

Tablefor4 · 09/04/2025 12:36

Sorry @Vintagedoh I've just checked my bag like that. And there are differences:

  • There's no R next to the tree on mine.
  • the leaves on the tree are indented into the metal (carved out as it were) rather than outlined.
  • the leather label inside says "Mulberry" and underneath "MADE IN ENGLAND"

Things do change, and I was trying to remember when I bought this - definitely before 2004 - maybe even before 2000 - but these are differences.
