Makeup shopping in London with 70 plus year old

ithappenedtomeagain · 06/04/2025 08:14

For her Birthday, my Mum has asked we go to London for the day and she would like to visit a makeup counter and get foundation advice and purchase some new make up (my treat).
She would like a natural look and specifically is looking for foundation / base. I suspect her expectations about a wonder product may not quite be realistic, but does anyone have any advice about which brands to go to, taking into account her age.

We are planning on going to Liberty and I was thinking Jones Road, but does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you

Trinny London. They are in Liberty.

Have you heard of Look Fabulous Forever? They are only online though as far as I know, but it’s all tailored towards mature skin. Made in the UK too.
Excellent YouTube tutorials. Maybe something to think about next time. Enjoy your day.

Liberty's opens at 10am. It should be nice and quiet on a weekday then.

BeaSure · 06/04/2025 19:36

Yes, I take Floisme's point about Boots No. 7 😊

TheFormidableMrsC · 06/04/2025 19:49

Book her into Charlotte Tilbury at Covent Garden. The cost is redeemable against purchase. It’s a lovely luxurious experience.

i know it is probably not the glamorous experience you may be looking for but my experience of boots colour matching for foundation is brilliant! And they have a variety of formulations which are great for different skin types!

I second this. The Boots make up consultant matched me with No 7 Stay Perfect with is perfect for my 61 year old skin.

Avoid powder!

If you want to try "luxury" brands you could get a lipstick from Charlotte Tilbury.

Boots No 7 foundations only come in around 10 colours. None suit me. I've tried Porcelain and it's too pink/grey. I'm paler than their little gadget can go.

Bobbi Brown's newest has something close to 43 shades in foundation.

Don't dismiss other brands like E Lauder, Clarins, Dior, Lancome.

I know you've given your Mum's age but skin varies so much on women.

I know 70 year olds who look 50, and 50 year olds who look 70!

Lisa Eldridge at liberty, The counter staff were fantastic and shade matched me perfectly with the skin tint (which I would highly recommend)
I felt the lady was a wee bit pushy for upselling but I’m pretty good at saying no nowadays.

I also had a happy shop there, a very nice young man instantly picked out the right thing for me.

I had a lovely experience at Guerlain in Harveh Nichols. Even got some champagne.

No you don't.

Space NK is also really good and you can book a consultation

Recycledblonde · 07/04/2025 11:53

I’ve done the makeup lesson in Trinny on the Kings Road and it was brilliant. The make up teacher was lovely and it’s done downstairs so nice and quiet plus you’re not on view to everyone.

redcord · 07/04/2025 14:31

Ooh Liberty's has a new restaurant- 75. Artwork by Quentin Blake. Opening times as the shop. Looks lovely for a treat lunch or afternoon tea.

PyrannosaurusRex · 07/04/2025 14:47

Maybe I've been unlucky but whenever I've had makeovers at SpaceNK, the MUA has 'matched' me to foundation two or three shades darker than my admittedly very pale skintone. Ditto Charlotte Tilbury. The Boots No7 woman with the whizzy 'skin tone diagnostic machine' aimed it at my freckles and couldn't understand why my foundation match was coming out at 'mediterranean holiday junkie' instead of 'sun-fearing Celt'...

The best foundation matching - and general make-up advice - I've had has been at Lisa Eldridge, Hourglass and Laura Mercier. The LE pop-up in Covent Garden a year or so ago was particularly brilliant.

How would you know? I do. Not sure why you're so sure of this.

Bet she does.

BeaSure · 09/04/2025 08:27

There is no way a 70 year old looks 50. My MiL is 80 and has amazing skin - thanks only to soap & water & cheap moisturiser- but she doesn't look 20 years younger.

BeaSure · 09/04/2025 08:28

Anyway, I fancy a trip to the LE counter in London.

@redcord @deeahgwitch
Thank you so much for the suggestions. We went yesterday and I had arranged tickets to flowers at saatchi gallery. Then onto Trinny in Kings road then lunch in Duke of York square.

All worked perfectly and the Trinny experience was great and she's delighted with her new make up (albeit a little sad to realise that no make up will actually take 20 years off you).

Thank you for all the replies.

Ah that’s brilliant @ithappenedtomeagain
What a lovely day you had.
I love love love that area of London on the very rare occasions I visit from Ireland.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 12/04/2025 16:13

Selfridges?

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 12/04/2025 16:14

Ah see you have been already 🤣

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 12/04/2025 21:47

So glad you both had a good day out.
