Bored of my Greige hair

I stopped dying my hair about 8 years ago and it is mostly a quite nice greigey grey and I get a lot of compliments on it. But I'm bored and as I get a bit older (43) feel like it needs to be a bit more interesting. I spent ages 16-35 dying it all sorts of nuts colours. I don't want to dye it dark again at all, but am wondering whether to go much more bright grey (a la Sali Hughes), or use some toners to try and get to a more buttery shade of blondish grey.

No expensive salons! Ideally something I can do myself as am both time and cash poor. Any views?

Am getting it chopped tomorrow as well into a nice blunt cut. Want to avoid middle aged vibes at all costs.

I think your hair is lovely. I wouldn't dye it, it would take so long to get it back to how it is.

Shetlands · 04/04/2025 19:39

My hair is now white all over and I spend a fortune every month having it tinted to look exactly as yours is naturally. Your hair looks fabulous and in great condition - I'm very envious!

If you're really bored with it you could have those buttery highlights you fancy as it would warm it up a bit. I have no idea how you could do that yourself though.

Treeleaf11 · 04/04/2025 19:41

I think it looks good. I wouldn't do anything to it.

EVHead · 04/04/2025 19:48

Your hair is beautiful and so healthy! I wouldn’t change a thing.

Doggymummar · 04/04/2025 19:52

It looks lovely and mine is similar. Last month I coloured it with casting semipermanent colour, it lasts 26 washes so about 4 months for me. I used the colour that is just called blonde and it beautifully soft shiny and a bit more interesting looking.

Pigeonqueen · 04/04/2025 19:54

Your hair colour is STUNNING. If that’s natural you are so lucky. That’s what I’m trying to work towards getting mine like! If you’re bored I’d go for a different hair cut, maybe a choppy shorter style to show off the natural highlights.

MerryMaidens · 04/04/2025 20:15

It is natural! God, maybe I just need a new lipstick or something. Thank you for all the compliments.

I will leave it alone until I've had a haircut...I guess I could always try some toners for amusement value.

I have serious hair envy now, your hair looks incredible!

madaboutpurple · 04/04/2025 20:19

Your hair is a lovely colour and in great condition.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 04/04/2025 20:19

How about doing something a bit fun. Like some cool colour underneath that you only see when you swish it?

iamnotalemon · 04/04/2025 20:33

I think your hair colour is lovely. I pay a fortune for mine to look like that 😂

Lamelie · 04/04/2025 20:37

Your hair is amazing.
don’t do anything permanent. Maybe Plantur silver? It conditions and strengthens the hair and brightens it, but honestly I’d be wary of changing anything about your hair.

TheMimsy · 04/04/2025 20:37

My god @MerryMaidens it’s like we are hair bored twins. I have similar grey hair and get so many compliments on the tones in it… but mines curly (it’s bob ish when straightened). I’m just boredddddddddd of it. Or maybe just bored?

I’ve been asking my hair dresser about some balayage then it’s not my roots being fettled with - had some 2 years ago when growing out the brown dye and it gave it a sunkissed look - but I also can’t imagine anything in with the grey now. I used to be auburn and played with many browns, reds coppers and purples when younger.

I have some wash out colours that last 1 wash on my course thick hair when I want a ‘zush’ of pink or something.

can’t be arsed scrubbing my face out. Sorry for toilet selfie - was playing with a new ChatGPT thing and couldn’t wait whilst out and about…

Agree, I like it as is.

I know what it’s like to get bored though, but I really wouldn’t do anything permanent / drastic.

Thatsenoughadulting · 04/04/2025 20:41

I agree with everyone else, it looks like you've spent a fortune to get it like that. If you want to play about with different colours though what about trying the bleach London toners? They wash out in a few washes. I went though a rose gold phase with my hair a few years ago. My mum is currently lavender and always gets loads of compliments.

BruFord · 04/04/2025 20:42

@TheMimsy Wow, your hair is gorgeous too!

I’m sitting here looking a frizzy mess, a truly bad hair day. No intention of posting a photo. 😂

MerryMaidens · 04/04/2025 20:50

Oh @TheMimsy yours looks awesome, I wish I had curls! Mine has been bright red as well, I had a sort of ginger quasi mullet during the indie sleaze years...

I was lingering by the bleach London bit in Superdrug yesterday. I'm off work for a week so maybe I'll try some toner in the underneath layers and if it looks mad no one will see me. I sort of want it to look a bit mad though.

Do ittttttt! My mantra - one of many that gets me in trouble - is “what’s the worst that can happen?”!

curls can be lovely, but are demanding fuckers and petty vindictive arseholes. I’ll often wake up and one side will play nicely and refresh into curls with a bit of water and product. The other side… it’s like “nahhhh bro… we is frizzy and puffed up to make you look like mad cat lady of her HRT patches for a week or three…”. My hair has some personality issues..

chickenlettuceunderbacon · 05/04/2025 18:07

But Sali Hughes hasn't got grey hair, it's dyed ashy blonde, and sometimes a dyed silvery grey blonde. Your hair as it is now is so much nicer.
