Black summer dress for orchestra

I'm ISO a black dress for a summer orchestra concert. I prefer midi or maxi length as I am a cellist. Short sleeves that allow movement (I have muscular arms so loose or stretchy better to fit. V necks suit me best and defined waist (between hourglass and pear shaped). UK size 14 and 5 ft 9 so if a longer length option that would be great. Can spend up to 80 pounds maybe a bit more if nice. But I never wear black usually so less expensive better. All leads appreciated!

Does it have to be a dress? I was wondering if a black pleated maxi skirt and a separate top would be an option. You might get more wear out of them if you don't usually wear dresses amd you would have more options for necklines and sleeves if you could choose the bottom half separately.

Something like this would give you plenty of cello space.

I’d probably go for something like this, but it may not be fitted enough at the waist for you

it’s a shame this looks out of stock in your size, but is this more the sort of style?

Would you consider black palazzo trousers and a black top?

Aparecium · 30/03/2025 23:29

Disturbia always have a good range of black dresses.

Taytotots · 31/03/2025 00:07

Thanks all. @evilharpy and @LovelyDaaling it doesn't have to be a dress so a skirt is fine, also looked at jumpsuits or culottes. @BassesAreBest yes I gear first would make me look huge, but I like the second one. Are you a double bass player? Not heard of them @Aparecium - will take a look.

I am a musician too and finding suitable black dresses outside of winter is always very difficult. Last winter I remembered to hunt them down so I have got a few at the moment - and not all warm ones. All from M&S but that was just luck. Lots of online searching too. Even more tricky for cellists as you need the skirt width! Good luck!

Taytotots · 31/03/2025 10:17

@RainBow725 thanks for the sympathy. I am not much of a shopper so that doesn't help either! Will try and look out in winter though.
@SilvieBear thanks. Those are exactly the kind of thing, particularly like the last one. A little more than I ideally wanted to spend but will keep my eye out for sales.

I got a very lovely Meghan Fabulous "jasmine" dress on Vinted which I wear for concerts. It has a nice swooshy wrap skirt that would work for a cellist. There may be other styles that work too. I don;t know if they ship to the UK, as I say I got it in Vinted.
