Mother of the bride outfit help please

Kneeslikethese · 30/03/2025 22:28

Daughter's wedding in October.
Bridesmaids wearing red, groomsmen, males in wedding party black suit, white shirt, red tie.

My husband and older teen son will be wearing above.
Teenage daughter is a bridesmaid so red.

What on earth do I wear?

I'm mid 50s, fat (size 22)
No clue about clothes at all, I normally live in jeans and tshits. I quite fancy a dress rather than trousers.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

I got my mother of the bride dress here https://www.shibumistyle.com/collections/all-womens-coats

they do shift dresses and jackets/coats in a vast range of colours. Can make to measure for you and you can choose style of dress and jacket in the fabric you prefer. A friend also got her outfit here. We’re very different shapes but both got the perfect outfit for us.

The most important factor is your budget - combined with whether you want something fresh from a shop, or pre-owned.

DisneyHag · 31/03/2025 13:37

If you have an expansive budget you may want to keep an eye on

https://gb.marinarinaldi.com/

which specialises in plus size clothes. They don’t have Autumn clothes in stock right now but there may be some in their next sales. Or you could wait until the end of the summer when A/W stock comes in.

madaboutpurple · 31/03/2025 18:00

Simply Be, JD Williams and Yours Clothing will be worth looking at. There are some Marina Rinaldi dresses on Vinted and eBay at the moment. Ulla Popken are a European company for Plus sizes. I hope you find a stunning dress/outfit.

Thanks all. I'm not too restricted on budget, always happy to get a bargain though.

Would a burgundy or deep red be inappropriate given the colour scheme? My daughter says she really doesn't mind what I wear but wouldn't want to make a faux pas by having a colour too close to the bridal party if that's not OK?

If you’re not a ‘uniformed’ member of the wedding group I’d honestly choose a different colour - or you’re going to look as if you feel snubbed. At that time of year a beautiful emerald silk would be seasonal, but would also contrast well with your daughter’s red dress.

DisneyHag · 31/03/2025 18:35

Only the wedding is next October. So summer dresses really won’t do.

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 31/03/2025 18:35

I had red bridesmaids! Well, more of a burgundy. My mum wore navy, which looked lovely with it and MIL wore a black and white pattern which looked great and suited the festive vibe (wedding was in December). Guests wore green, navy, grey, black. One friend wore a lovely burnt orange that really suited her. I didn't have a dress code - I think people were mostly swayed by the season.

MrsMitford3 · 31/03/2025 18:36

My advice is to pick something that will not match but coordinate-
think of how it will look in the photos when you pick.

Def not red. If the red the bridesmaids are wearing is a jewel tone then you wear a complimentary colour-maybe a rich blue?
I think burgundy is too red but not red?
Hard to say though without seeing the actual colours.

Thanks all, I'll look at everything and emerald and have a look at the suggested sites. Thanks again for the help.

Maybe something like one of these? I'm an hourglass figure, big hips + bust, reasonable waist, all in proportion but large at a size 22. I reckon with good underwear something like one of these should be alright?

(I'm really bad at this 🙈)

None of those strike me as particularly autumnal. And lace can look a little - dated. Would you really not prefer something more 2025? (Particularly since you can be flexible on budget.)

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/03/2025 23:46

They are all nice dresses but you will need to consider that in October you are likely to be a bit chilly just wearing short sleeves. What kind of venue is it? Thinking that if everything is taking place in a hotel it would be warmer than eg a church and a marquee.

Enko · 31/03/2025 23:54

Similar situation to you op. Dd wedding in October and I am a size 18.

I am eyeing up a dress and coat from Alquema

I like the idea I could use the dress after but make more formal with a coat. They are not cheap though. Lots of colour choices too. Yes it says OS but they are cut ina. Way I think will go to a 22.

There’s another thread on Mumsnet, like this, going at the moment.
Worth a look at all the suggestions there @Kneeslikethese

It's tricky. Looking for a dress for my son's wedding in July. I am 61 and fat.

Have no intention of going near the usual suggestions of Marina Rinaldi/Simply Be/Yours - just because I'm not slim doesn't mean I want polyester and those wide V necks that aren't quite deep enough. I've been looking at dresses from Rixo, Farm Rio and Camilla. I've also bought a pattern and will make a dress and if I love it will get a dressmaker to do one in fabulous fabric. (Floaty and summery for this wedding.) I'm tall too so lots of brands just aren't long enough. One Hundred Stars just doesn't quite work for me size wise and the fabric's quite floppy for a wedding.
