Long story short, I tried to bleach my hair myself, it's gone orange, I feel I've damaged it, not sure where to go from here.

All the details of what I've done:

I've been blonde for years, my last appointment I had a full head of foils with I think she said a 'root melt' to help it blend with my roots as it grows.

I saw an ad for a company called The Shade (I'm in Australia), where you chat to online colourist and they send you all the products you need and detailed instructions. This really appealed to me as I'm extreme time poor and finding a spare 4 hours to sit in a salon is really hard. I was happy to have an all over colour rather than foils.

The colourist recommended a bleach wash at 27% vol, followed by a 10.1 colour at 20% volume. After the bleach wash my roots were very orange, but I trusted the process and continued with my colour. The results were a very strawberry blonde, quite a significant ginger tinge towards the roots.

I sent a photo to the colourist and she recommended bleaching again, suggesting I hadn't left it long enough and I should be looking for a very pale yellow. I did this and it was still orange (I'm assuming I didn't leave it long enough again?)

I then put a 8A temporary colour over it which just made it a darker orange but more muted which was OK.

I bought a Fanola blue shampoo to try and get rid of the orange, which seems to have lightened the orange again.

So my question is, where to go from here? I'd love to try and bleach again and leave it much longer this time (is that actually what I need to do, is this the reason it's orange?) but obviously I've now bleached twice in the space of a week, so how long should I leave it before doing it again so I don't completely ruin my hair? Or have I completely messed it up at this point? I'm aiming for a cool toned level 10 but would be happy if I can get to a level 9. I believe my midlength-ends are already a 10 and it's the few inches regrowth at the roots which is the problem. I think my natural hair colour is a 6 or 7.

Honestly I’d be going to a professional. Don’t bleach again as it could really damage your hair further and potentially snap off.

Thanks, I was thinking I probably just need to bite the bullet and book in. How long would you leave it before going, I assume my hair needs some time to have a break. Also, do you think it was not leaving the bleach in long enough that made it orange?

It could be a number of factors - previous colour history, hair type, the quality of products used etc.
i can’t say how long to leave it, I’d say go for a consultation and let a professional assess your hair and they will advise how long to leave it

Well for a start u had to bleach throu that root melt !
I would not apply any more bleach and I’m gunna be honest I don’t think u will reach a cool
level 10 blonde with tint !
I have used high lift tints in a salon and they rarely lift cool unless they have added toners !
And I’m a professional stylist !
I would book into a salon and get this fixed otherwise if u carry on u will have breakage not straightaway but 3 months in u will get breakage ! And that is a long road recovery x

I doubt you can fix this at home and definitely don’t put more bleach on as your hair will likely just snap.
Book in at the hairdressers but in the meantime use a hair treatment masque at home, a nourishing one with oil.
Apparently mayonnaise works but I’ve never tried it.

I just googled getting rid of hair dye and there is a hair dye remover available. It looks like most chemists sell a version of it .

madaboutpurple · 27/03/2025 09:54

There are solutions on google actually if you put in the query Why did my hair turn orange. It says there are ways of dealing with it at home. Then you could book in at a salon or use a home dye.

Thanks yes I have done heaps of research and I'm 99% sure I can achieve the colour I want, BUT it's the breakage I'm worried about now I've put so much bleach on already.

Thank you, I've bought an expensive mask and I'm using it every time I wash my hair, plus a leave in conditioner. Will book in with a hairdresser, do you think a month would give it enough time to rest?

have you Greek or Turkish ethnicity? Very difficult to not go orange with bleach if so.

Not that I'm aware of! I used to do my own hair years ago and never had a problem. I think they must have put some darker colour on my roots last time and I just didn't leave the bleach on long enough.
