Would you buy what is probably a fake Coach bag off eBay?

Less than half the price of bag from a Coach bona fide outlet.

From Japan or China.

Very few reviews.

However this item is no longer available from Coach genuine store.

Would you be tempted?

You can return apparently - that’s how eBay enforce their policy of no fakes.

But is it even worth it - also if the bag turns out to be a low quality copy?

Anyone tried this? I’m curious.

No - I wouldn’t waste my money on a fake bag. Why would anyone want buy a cheap fake from eBay?

jackiesgirl · 20/03/2025 15:44

I’m an absolute sucker for a fake bag. Good fakes though - not massively obvious ones. I’d get it in a heartbeat. If it’s a good fake who’s going to know? Someone once had a massive panic because she splashed some drink on my “Mulberry” at a party, there are great ones out there

RUforRealCoachey · 20/03/2025 16:57

Thanks @jackiesgirl . You and a Mulberry and a spilt drink 😜

I suppose you wouldn’t be able to tell what the quality was like until you received it 🤷‍♀️

I probably have enough handbags but it was a cutey so was tempted.

No - I'd rather spend money on a well-made leather handbag with no brand (or, better, support an independent maker) than buy a fake brand which puts money in the hands of human traffickers and drug dealers.

(I bought a genuine Coach bag in the JL sale for less than half full price. I don't think it's worn especially well)

SleepingisanArt · 20/03/2025 17:24

Japan has a huge 'pre-loved' market for designer bags. They have amazing stores full of authentic designer items, all authenticated. I was amazed! So if the seller is Japanese it is more likely to be authentic - plus ebay have their authentication process.

Hoppinggreen · 20/03/2025 17:28

No, I don't buy fakes.
If I can't afford the real thing I buy a brand I can afford.
Fakes are purely to impress other people and thats not something I am interested in doing.
Don't much care what anyone else does though

The vast majority of fakes aren’t funding traffickers or drug barons 🤣. They are just manufacturers who have found a lucrative market.

that whole traffickers and drug lord rumour was created by the brands they copy.
if you’ve lived in China you see them all the time. Factories just producing in some cases really good bags lining some manufacturing factory owner shit tons of money
It doesn’t even make sense.

eBay USA will have a ton of second hand coach bags. Homeschool pickers are always getting them at goodwill for 20 dollars and selling them on eBay.

glitterturd · 20/03/2025 18:59

Half the retail price is still too much for a fake.

Beketaten · 20/03/2025 19:56

Won't you have to pay to shop it back to China/Japan if you want to return it? That makes it too risky for me.

I'd look on Vinted instead. I used to have some fake bags - only really good fakes that I got in Istanbul and Dubai that were indistinguishable from the real thing - but now I buy vintage on Vinted instead. Be careful though, there are a lot of fakes on there too being sold as authentic, I'm always reporting them!

RUforRealCoachey · 20/03/2025 20:25

Yes @Beketaten I would have to look at the return process and price! I had a very bad experience on Vinted which put me off, to do with a handbag, naturally! I bought a handbag that was supposed to be new and it was in a shocking state and somehow I returned the handbag and they kept the money and the handbag – if you can believe it. What a stressful couple of weeks that was. In the end, I had to do chargeback through my bank. I did win but what a palaver. I read about really good fakes you can find in Istanbul, but then I would have to factor in the flights LOL.

Whoever said I’m doing it to impress people 🥱 nothing could be further from the truth. I genuinely like the design. But what would Mumsnet be like without some poster unpleasantly attributing an untrue motive to you, I wondered how long it would take…

interesting what you say @Doggymummar about eBay USA. You are clearly way ahead of the curve.

I just watch a lot of thrifting videos, it's a great way to learn brands we don't see so often in the UK. I bought an Old Navy t-shirt for £1 and sold it for £32 from watching the American shows.

MinnieCoops · 20/03/2025 22:00

No I don’t like fakes. The pleasure for a decent bag for me is knowing it’s real, I like the treat aspect of it. I wouldn’t judge anyone having a fake though and some look pretty decent

sploshsplash · 20/03/2025 22:05

I suppose we now live in a time where we care a lot about how we look but no one has the money to justifiably spend thousands on a bag. Why not get a good genuine fake and roll with it. Unless it’s a super expensive exclusive one it won’t keep its value anyway. Most of the time I wouldn’t know the difference and no one would really ask!
I doubt anyone would say “I like your bag, is it real?”

omg same here! i’m all for a good replicas, as long as it’s well made and not screaming obvious, who’s really gonna know? i’ve had people compliment my “designer” pieces without a clue. i got one of my favorites from hypereptime and honestly, even I forget it’s not real sometimes 😂 it’s all about the vibe, not the label!
