Wedding Guest dress/accessories

Going to my sisters wedding in August and planning on wearing this dress. I'm usually in casual clothes or running gear and don't usually do smart (& have turned 50 which isn't helping!). I think the colour is quite good on me as I have dark (although greying hair) but am feeling a bit clueless about accessories if anyone has any ideas please?

It looks nice OP - maybe gold shoes/accessories? I'd wouldn't wear those beige shoes with it as they don't flatter the colour of the dress. Silver would probably look nice too.

Thecatknowsshesboss · 18/03/2025 19:53

Thank you!

Obviously I hate choosing shoes as well (& hate heels with a passion!)

I do usually wear silver jewellery but was thinking gold might be better with this (even if I don't own any!)

That's a favourite colour of mine, and you look very good and toned in the pic. Wish I was!

Anyway, I'd love to see a pale pink shimmery chiffon wrap with that, and silver accessories. Try both silver and gold and see what pleases you most.

I know wraps and the like are very much frowned upon on MN, but sometimes they are the only things that work for a special occasion like a wedding.

@varden thank you but unfortunately not that toned especially my arms! I thought a wrap perhaps but hadn't thought of that colour so that could be nice.

Am I allowed to say I’m not entirely sure about the dress?

I’m considerably older than you and find it more than a bit … old fashioned. The very top heavy cowling and the odd length. It’s not a colour I’d wear - but it’s also simply not a current colour. In short, I’m pretty sure that between now and August you could find something with more pizzazz.

If it were me I would wear closed toes or slingbacks, not sandals, with that dress. I'm not keen on bare legs with that length of dress so I would wear really good quality sheer tights and closed toe shoes- either something like LK Bennet low heels or something flat but very dressy from Pretty Ballerina.

With the cowl neck a necklace might be difficult. You could try stacking silver bracelets.

On top for getting to venue, sitting in church, I'd wear a loose jacket or coat at least 3/4 or the same length as the dress. This shape and idea.

The dress is Hobbs? I take it you already own it?

It needs a nice light jacket, some pretty gold or silver jewellery and some kitten heeled shoes. I agree silver shoes to match the jewellery would be nice. You can get away with three different colours in an outfit so far you have two with shoes and dress. You could have the jacket in another colour. Check out the clothing colour wheel, yourube style pages or pinterest for ideas.

According to style pages you could have a white, black or beige jacket for a classic look or red or coral for a bolder look.

I like the colour but personally I would wear a belt to break up the block colour and soften the look around your waist. I'm a fan of sparkly belts/flowers for weddings.

BetsyRegards · 19/03/2025 08:40

You can’t be serious, @Gettingbysomehow? Shock

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 19/03/2025 09:31

If you zoom in you can see the dress has a clearly defined waistband. It's more obvious here. Tying a belt round that will look like wrapping up a parcel.

Classic black accessories? I know this dress is a bit darker than yours but good colour combo I think.

I wore the same colour to a wedding last year but a bit scared to say what I wore with it now!

user1492757084 · 19/03/2025 16:02

The dress looks great on you. Pale pink or cream accessories would be sweet. Do you need a hat?

Darkclothes · 19/03/2025 16:13

I love the colour, its my favourite. The dress is nice enough, but the top part and material looks hot for an August wedding. Personally, I'd find it a bit casual to wear to a wedding, but obviously depends on the formality of it. Maybe a short jacket- but then you might get too hot?

I'd start with good foundation wear underneath, to ensure its smooth. Although you have a great figure and it already looks smooth in the pic.

I'd avoid a necklace, because of the cowling. Maybe matching earrings and a bracelet. You could get away with something that has multiple colours or statement pieces to add a bit of interest.

You said hate heels, what about low wedges?

millymoo1202 · 19/03/2025 16:40

I’d wear clashing shoes or bag, coral or red maybe

Thecatknowsshesboss · 19/03/2025 18:18

Thank you everyone for all the different ideas (even those that weren't as keen on the dress!) It's all given me loads to think about x

It is a Hobbs dress as i do like their dresses. The wedding isn't in Church so not a formal affair.

Thank you too for the compliments I've lost some weight recently so that was very nice of you! x
