What jacket to wear for a formal event

I have a navy full length chiffon dress that I will be wearing to a black tie event. What jacket, style and colour would go best with it?

None.
Wear any weather appropriate jacket or coat to get to the venue and deposit it in the cloakroom on arrival.

Why do you want to wear a jacket over your dress?

It’s in a large museum type building and April so I’m not sure how warm it may or may not be. Just trying to gives myself some options

Without seeing the dress, difficult but other than the "borrowed male partner's dinner jacket because it's cold" look I'm struggling to imagine any jacket that would look good over a navy full length chiffon dress.

You could try playing around with a short, very obviously fake, fur jacket, or, and I know they're despised on here, taking a shawl, but not wearing it unless it is really cold.

Navy full length chiffon dresses aren't really intended to have jackets on top.
Max Mara do short cropped versions of their Teddy coat but they'd be worn on arrival , not kept on once you're there. If dress isn't revealing, then add a full length slip and thermal vest.

A friend of mine wore a very cool cropped leather jacket over a baby blue chiffon floor length dress at a wedding. She looked great but could carry it well - slim, gorgeous, no-fucks-given attitude about whether it was 'formal' enough. The dress was quite simple as I recall, not flouncy.

Could you do that?

To note being slim and gorgeous is completely irrelevant. It's confidence. I have a cropped , very fitted, electric blue with a green satin lining, Harris tweed riding jacket which I could wear over an evening dress (although would depend on the dress)

Baum und Pferdgarten have done their Bebeth jackets in various colours and materials. I have navy brocade and black jacquard and they go well with many dresses.

How about wearing a contrasting ivory double breasted blazer, either draped over your shoulders or worn open with the sleeves pushed up.
