Does anyone perm their hair anymore?

I have thick, straight hair and can't do all the blow drying, gadgets etc to get waves and volume due to disability.
I was wondering if a perm might be a good idea.
Have perms moved on from the frizz and dryness I remember from my last experience of them 40 years ago?

May I ask what sort of perm do you ask for please? I don’t want curls as such, just a bit of lift.
I have really thick straight hair with a slight wave on one side which is quite irritating.
