Lovely top-don’t know how to wear!

I’ve been given this lovely top as a gift. I’d like to wear it but I’m a size 16 / 18 and whilst it fits well, it highlights my stomach in an unflattering way! Any suggestions for what to wear on the bottom - trousers, skirt, shoes??? Im 42 and 5ft 8. Thanks

It's lovely! I see the model has wide fit jeans on. Personally, (and I worked in fashion for eleven years) I would have suggested to a customer to wear that with a skinny jean. Based on the fact it has puffy sleeves and a sort of A-line waist, teaming it up with a wide fit could generate a 'whole wide fit' if you know what i mean.
I think the best bet would be some high waisted trousers that are fitting on the legs. This would give an all round slimmer appearance. Hope this helps.

Quite a bland top so would just wear with jeans.

I think it would look nice with blue trousers

DuchessOfNarcissex · 11/03/2025 17:46

It's a 'nice top and jeans' top. Wear with jeans (wide or skinny) or black/colour from the print trousers/skirt/culottes.

Flamingoknees · 11/03/2025 18:50

It goes very well with the wide jeans shown - plus your height should carry this look off. Skinny jeans or slum jeans would be a very old fashioned look, with this particular top imo.

BurntBroccoli · 11/03/2025 19:35

I used to wear that style with kick flare jeans and block heeled boots.

howshouldibehave · 11/03/2025 19:40

Hmm, I think if a top highlights a part of me in an unflattering way, then it's not lovely and I probably won't wear it as it'll presumably highlight my stomach no matter what I wore it with?

Agreed. Defintely not skinny jeans.

Yorkshirelass04 · 11/03/2025 19:45

I really love that top, and now I want it!

I agree skinny jeans and a tan bag would look fab.

ShaunaSadeki · 11/03/2025 19:52

Lovely top! But if you don’t feel comfortable and confident in it, will you enjoy wearing it? I speak from experience. I would wear it with wide legged high waisted jeans or trousers and trainers.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 11/03/2025 19:57

Definitely not a narrow or skinny jean. Either a wider leg jean as pictured or else a heavy cotton trouser in any neutral.

As you'll be showing some skin at the neckline and wrists, and as the waist is fitted, a wider trouser or jean will work very well to create a good balance. Depending on the time of year, either a very open sandal (which will again balance out the neckline) or else something more closed and pointed to draw the eye down. There's a myriad of colour in the blouse, so when it comes to accessories, you can either pick one of those or else go for something else, particularly bright to give it all some contrast.

CharlotteCChapel · 11/03/2025 20:01

I'd wear it with a straight skirt and boots. I know this is counterintuitive try a wide belt. It surprising how much difference a belt makes whatever size you are.

ShinyClouds · 11/03/2025 20:22

I’m similar, and wouldn’t wear it. Just not flattering if you have boobs and belly,

Helloyouok · 11/03/2025 20:30

The wide leg jeans on the model look good but in real life I think flared or boot cut jeans would work better where they are slimmer on the thigh.

Skinny jeans would be fine but a bit 2012 imo.

WifeofBathtime · 11/03/2025 20:51

Skinny jeans are back- in fact they never went away. Wear what you like and suits you.

Unnecessarily rude??

I agree re jeans during the day, or if dressing up for evening I would go with a black satin slip skirt OP.

notatinydancer · 11/03/2025 21:55

Wide leg black trousers ?
I wouldn't wear skinnies if you have a big stomach (I have , I don't wear them ) and the top is short.
I don't like skinnies and short tops as my stomach bulges underneath. I hate that look.

Musntapplecrumble · 11/03/2025 22:19

A black straight skirt? Pencil skirts are back! 🤔

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/03/2025 23:14

Gorgeous top!

I would wear with black jeans rather than blue. Maybe a straight cut. And heeled boots.

I'd say it's anything but bland?

OP, it's lovely btw and I'd wear any type of jeans with it.

Grammarnut · 12/03/2025 00:05

Straight cut jeans rather than the wide cut - which give too chunky an outline.

Acommonreader · 12/03/2025 07:05

Thanks so much everyone! I really appreciate the advice- lots of ideas to try.

I would go wide leg jeans. Definitely not black trousers or a black skirt as a patterned top and black bottoms gives off department store uniform vibes!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/03/2025 10:11

it doesn't, but it needs styling to not look 'safe'.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 12/03/2025 15:36

Very mumsy... frumpy.
Maybe pleather skinnies
