Holiday evening dress for my engagement!

Ladies, I need your help! DP and I are going on holiday abroad in a couple of weeks. He is going to propose whilst we are away. Fairly sure the proposal will be at sunset one or two days into the holiday.

I’d like to wear something really nice. Either a dress or light floaty trousers and top.

I’m 50’s, size 16 and 5’ 6. I’d love some ideas please!

How exciting!

I was just eyeing up some of these dresses from another thread

Might any of the maxi dresses here fit the bill?

TheMorels · 09/03/2025 10:00

Congratulations!

I have this Hush Grace dress in both colours. It’s really gorgeous on and perfect for holidays.

I really like that, might be a bit long for me. Might order and see though!

It is long. I’m 5’8 and it’s pretty much ankle length.

Ah thank you. Don’t want to be having to hold it up!

Genuine question how do you know he's going to? Isn't it supposed to be a surprise?

Well yes, it is supposed to be a surprise! It’s just something we have talked about, we see it as the next natural step in our relationship.
He told me that he has bought the ring and is going to propose on this holiday.

I’m glad we have talked about it to be honest. Before I met him I was quite set on being single, and certainly never envisioned marrying again.

Wondering the same thing. If you've both agreed to be married, isn't a proposal to wed sort of redundant?

At any rate enjoy the holiday!

He is very traditional and I actually love that about him. Surprise or not, it will be very special for us both.

I think it's lovely that you know in advance and can be properly prepared. I am similar age and stats to you and personally would want slightly crepey bosom and flabby upper arms covered - do you have any neckline and sleeve preferences yourself and do you have any colours etc in mind?

I’m ok with any neckline, just not too high. Definitely coverage on the upper arms!

Colour wise, nothing too busy print. Fairly open to brights though.

I love the colour of this one but if you like the hush one it's probably not your style at all!

I like the style of it, just not the fabric.

Just thought I’d pop back to say I’m now a fiancée! Thank you for all the suggestions. The night he proposed I was wearing a Joanne jumpsuit, which was perfect!
