Charlotte Tilbury Squalene made from Shark

Hellohellohello1234 · 06/03/2025 14:12

Does anyone know about the discontinued Magic Lip Scrub product frok Charlotte Tilbury, it was made from Shark Squalene, which is illegal to use in the UK. When did they discontinue this product and would anyone boycott Tilbury because of this past ingredient use?

That's horrific. Yes, I would boycott CT if I thought their products were decent enough to buy in the first place (I don't).

Are you sure? I thought they used plant-based squalane

I only buy their vegan products anyway 🤷‍♀️

Do you have a source @Hellohellohello1234 ?

So I have been in email conversation with them. And they have been VERY fishy. They just would not disclose what the Magic Lip Scrub was once made from. Multiple times they avoided answering.

Here are snippets from their emails threads. I went back to them over 6 times repeating.

'As the Magic Lip Scrub has sadly been discontinued, we are not able to provide further details on this product. '

'After looking into this we can confirm that the Charlotte's Magic Serum Crystal Elixir is suitable for vegans and does not contain Squalane.

Unfortunately, the Magic Lip Scrub is not suitable for vegans. '

And one more time in their last response.
(I hounded them and asked multiple times if it was from Shark origion)

'
Again since sadly Charlotte's Magic Lip Scrub is discontinued we can disclose nothing further on this matter and will consider your query closed.'

I would not be using this brand after this!! It makes me think what else could they be hiding.

It doesn't massively surprise me that the customer service reps aren't super keen to deal with repeated requests about a long-discontinued product.

Why not contact Shark Allies to ask them rather than spreading rumours? They say that they only add companies to their "good" list (where Charlotte Tilbury is listed) when they have had sufficient clarification about what particular plants sources the squalane is from.

AmateurNoun · 07/03/2025 03:54

It had beeswax in it so it wouldn't have been vegan btw. Their email saying that it wasn't a vegan product doesn't suggest to me that it's shark squalane.

I thought that the point of a boycott was that you stopped the boycott when the company stopped doing the bad thing. Otherwise there's no incentive for them to stop.

Given the illustration for squalene on the Charlotte Tilbury website is a picture of olives, I think we can assume that this is not shark derived and you are at risk of libelling the company. I don’t know why you’d ever assume shark derived!

ThejoyofNC · 07/03/2025 06:01

I don't really understand why you're so obsessed with a product that's no longer in production?

Hellohellohello1234 · 10/03/2025 21:13

If a company presents themselves as this super clean brand but started out with one of the worst ingredients, shark squalene, how are they allowed to just hid that knowledge from the public eye? She decided to use dead shark and now wants to be put on the good girl list and act like that ingredient was never used just because she discontinued it. If it were beeswax why are they withholding that information. Just tell me it is beeswax. I won't let this drop until she tells me directly the truth.

What if a company used to use human liver oil in a product that is now discontinued, you still using that brand yeah?

I'm pretty sure you aren't even on Charlottes radar

Clinique, L'Oreal, Boots brands all used to use it. Presumably you are also hounding and boycotting them too?

All now switched to plant based products

They did that in like 2008 and they owned up and they don't promote themselves as vegan warriers bla bla. CT has newly stopped. And is hiding it!! Just own it and move on. That's the bit that's got me.

Every product that we consider unethical now was once deemed reasonable to use. There's no point punishing a company for what they no longer do, whether it's shark a few years ago or whale a century ago.

This is ridiculous and libellous.

So let's weigh up the evidence.

On the one hand:

  • Shark Allies confirmed at the time that Charlotte Tilbury did not use shark squalane;
  • the image on the website suggests that it's derived from olives;
  • the company has a good record on issues such as this.

On the other hand:

  • You are struggling to get information from customer service about a long-discontinued product.

I'm really not surprised that customer service don't have an answer to this in the info available to them now given that it is discontinued. I also don't understand why you started contacting them about this just recently and why you are refuting the Shark Allies information 🤷‍♀️
