Talk to me about hats, for the purposes of not getting sun stroke in foreign climes

I'm not a hat person, I tend to ram a baseball cap on if it's raining on the school run or a really dreadful hat I have for when it snows ("mum, you look like a farmer..." "thank you darling").

I'm going to Florida on Thursday, it's 32 degrees there, I should wear a hat right? DH has baseball cap so will burn his ears !, DD has fab pink cowboy hat, DS has white and camoflage beanie hat. I have too much hair for hats but will I regret not wearing one?

Hat advice please!!!

Buy a straw/cowboy hat, they are lovely. I don't wear hats in hot climates, but used to wear a wooly hat in the UK from October to May , I was the joke of the playground, I think

McDreamy · 11/05/2008 19:04

I never wear a hat, I have too much hair and have never had a problem here in Cyprus but I live here and am used to the heat. If you are going to expose yourself to that kind of heat very quickly then I would have thought a hat is a very sensible option. You don't want to ruin your holiday for the sake of a bout of sunstroke - drink plenty of water too!

....but above all have a FABULOUS time

expatinscotland · 11/05/2008 19:06

I never wore one and lived in hot climates nearly all my life.

BUT, I have really dark hair and olive skin.

I'd go straw hat if I had to have one.

FloridaKbear · 11/05/2008 19:40

So I won't look like a plonker if i get a similar hat to DD's (which is a fabulous, pink straw cowboy hat)? I was thinking of getting the one in brown that I saw in a shop last week - tried it on but put it back and told myself to act my age!! But I did secretly love it ha ha and it was only a fiver.

DH will be buying ridiculous beanie type hat too, at the airport!!

I wear a little handkerchief scarf thing that looks like it would be tied underneath your hair at the back of your neck, but it is elastic with material covering it iykwim.

It keeps the sun off and when you go on all the water rides at the parks, it does not matter if it gets wet as it dries very quickly.

FloridaKbear · 11/05/2008 20:03

will i not look Amish?

Well I hadn't thought about that one. I am sure I have never looked Amish. Mine is pink with sparkly things on.

bellavita · 11/05/2008 21:02

Suppose I could always wear my black cowboy hat that I got at the Take That concert. It flashes at the front and has feathers all the way round!

FloridaKbear · 11/05/2008 21:45

That's going to be a good look bella!

Ineed sunhat advice too as I am going to be continuing the door-to-door market research for the moment and (having felt hideously ill all weekend) know that I need a hat. I am fair skinned, probably bucketloads of celtic genes or something) - can anyone advice on cheap hat that won't make me look like a rambler and is not so practical that it will frighten mundanes whose doors I have to kn0ock on...

FloridaKbear · 11/05/2008 22:00

FloridaKbear · 12/05/2008 21:57

I tried on a cowboy hat in a shop today - whipped it off quick before hoards of 20-somethings laughed their arses off.

OP posts:
bellavita · 13/05/2008 07:29

Just get it and run out of the shop (pay first of course).

You will be amazed at what some people look like in Florida. All shapes, sizes, style of clothing so I would not worry at all .

zippitippitoes · 13/05/2008 07:42

MrsJohnCusack · 13/05/2008 07:49

woven cotton excellent, as califrau says you can shove it in a bag
we HAVE to wear hats here and you do get used it, then everybody wears them here as the sun is so fierce.
