The stuff costs about £30 and I'm
Thinking about seeing if I can do it myself.

Anyone done this and have any words of wisdom?

I've paid for one at a hairdressers, the result was fantastic for me.

Since then I buy it and do it myself, the result is close enough to salon results that I wouldn't paysalon prices for it again personally. But it's worth noting that you need hair straighteners which go to a high enough temperature, GHDs do not get up to high enough temperatures.

Only other thing worth noting is that be very careful to not get the fumes in your eyes, it will sting alot if you do, and make sure it's well ventilated when applying and whilst drying etc.

I do it myself, with the help of a friend. So 2 hairdryers, 2 straightener. Still takes ages and you need to sit right beside an open window - I do it at my back door.
It's a horrible process but to me it's still worth it!

Don't think my straighteners will get hot enough as they are oldish GHDs

I've done it many times using old GHD's. It worked really well and lasted about 3 months. Really pleased with the results.

Get someone to help you, watch out for the fumes. Looks pretty grim for the few days you can't wash it, wear up or wear hats.

Make sure you use the correct aftercare.

Would anyone mind sharing what kits they have used? And if you would recommend that brand?

Rosietru · 19/02/2025 20:40

I've usually get this one. I have quite thick shoulder length hair and get two applications out of it. kit

Kerikit was the top one until they discontinued.

I've used chocococo in the past, results were good but the fumes were much, much worse than others, most applications resulted in stinging red weepy eyes.

My go to would be Brazillian Straight, same quality result but the potency of the fumes were far less, no irritated eyes, but you still need to ventilate the room. The kit with clips, comb etc is only an extra £1 on amazon so I usually go for that one. One pot lasts me three applications, each application lasts around 3 months.

I have done it myself several times, doesn’t last as long as the salon one but does make a big improvement that lasts a couple of months.

The back can be tricky if your hair is quite long - I always use GHD’s, didn’t know about them not getting as hot.

I now have a L’Oréal Steampod but read somewhere not to use steam as it could affect the result.

I’ve used a few different ones so following here for recommendations- tried the Answr brand and didn’t think it was that good but yet it seems to get decent reviews.
