What would you wear with this top?

I’m going to a birthday party in a bar and have bought this top which is more flattering than I thought it would be, so definitely want to wear it! However, what would you wear with it on your bottom half? For context I’m early 40s, size 8/10 and average height.

My friend always looks very put together & when I asked for tips she said that when she buys something new she copies the whole outfit the model is wearing on the website. I’ve started doing that (even if it’s just copying the colours) & it seems to work! So in your case, I’d wear that top with similar leather trousers to the model

Taylorlovestravis · 18/02/2025 11:57

Thanks @happytobemrsg I did look at those trousers but I’m not sure they would suit me. Also I’m wary of wearing fake leather with a synthetic top - I don’t want to look cheap if you know what I mean? And I don’t want to necessarily buy real leather trousers just for one night. Maybe I should order the ones on website and see.

As the top is fitted and short I'd go with tailored wide leg trousers if you don't want to go pleather.

TheGlamour · 18/02/2025 12:11

Maybe this - bargain and available in a 10 (US 6):

Batsheva skirt

Definitely something non-shiny anyway.

Taylorlovestravis · 18/02/2025 12:15

@JackieGoodman I wondered about black wide leg jeans? Maybe not dressy enough.
I will think more about the pleather! I have some pleather skinny trousers I haven’t worn for years.

Wide leg black jeans would work with heels. Top is very feminine so more structured "masculine" trousers would work better than skinnies imo.

happytobemrsg · 18/02/2025 12:53

I’d definitely avoid skinnies. The top is so fitted so a wider or baggier leg would balance it out better

cannaethink · 18/02/2025 13:01

I’m the same age, same size (bit taller) and would wear a long skirt like this

TheGlamour · 18/02/2025 13:27

I looked at several long black skirts, @cannaethink - but I think it would just be too drab an outfit for a party.

Taylorlovestravis · 18/02/2025 13:52

I agree about avoiding the skinnies!

Thats exactly what I was thinking!
Id probably go for some silver trainers too (but Im not really a posh shoe person).

Strawberrycream123 · 18/02/2025 17:21

I’d wear a pleated black midi skirt with some amazing heels and fabulous earrings. Or if I wanted to make it look a bit more edgy, some wide leg jeans/trousers, probably leather, with a fabulous hair up style (maybe top bun) and some dangly earrings.

I was just thinking the same.

That is awful and definitely not a night out piece of clothing.

I don't think a skirt is ever the place for that 'woosh' graphic

Taylorlovestravis · 18/02/2025 21:40

Thanks all! Going to try it with wide leg black jeans and a black long skirt. I’m afraid I’m not a fan of the Batsheva skirt at all. 😬

Never heard of this company until someone on Mumsnet started suggesting certain items from their "collection" recently.
The clothes are simply awful

Tight-fitting blue jeans or black miniskirt but not pleather 🤔

veggie50 · 20/02/2025 06:54

I'd try black wide leg or boot cut jeans. Alternatively, culotte and skinny leather / suede heeled boots if you want it more dressy.

GreenCandleWax · 20/02/2025 11:17

I have just been reading an article about the hazards of micro-plastics (in today's Times), which are everywhere including food packaging, household stuff and clothing. So definitely not plastic trousers for me, and am going to forego all synthetic fabrics as they are laden with these dangerous particles.
For the fitted top I'd wear some slightly cropped wide leg trousers.

Alwaysbackandforth · 20/02/2025 22:04

I thought the fake leather trousers were appalling. But this fake leather skirt is worse!
There is nothing attractive about leather trousers and skirts, real or fake.
