Can we have a "Summer style mistakes to avoid" thread?

A rhetorical question, in fact, as I have now started one.

My observations from 3 days of summer weather:

  1. Change your handbag. Saw woman in v lightweight summery outfit with clunky great across the body black leather handbag.
  1. Unkempt toenails - should go without saying but sandals and toenails au naturel look a bit grim if you are over about 8.
  1. Buy clothes that fit - hell, buy the next size up. Tight summer-y clothes which pinch a bit and make you feel - and therefore look - all hot and bothered are not a good look.

That's it so far, but I might make a perambulation of the office and come back with some more...

make sure your t-shirts are long enough

even if your muffin is brown it still looks yuk poking out from your top

smurfgirl · 09/05/2008 13:35

Bikini instead of bra if your boobs are bigger than b cup = saggy tits, even if you are 21 and pert.

ChippyMinton · 09/05/2008 13:36

Don't wear leggings under shorts

Don't wear old faded things.

JackieNo · 09/05/2008 13:37

To go with the unkempt toenails, also make sure your heels are smooth - cracked heels and sandals is not a good look. Makes me wince to see it.

Ooh - good point re heels, JackieNo.

i have a particularly ferocious sander which I got from one of those very scary looking pharmacies in France (all suppositories and minceur products) and need to have a duel pronged attack with that and the Flexitol this weekend.

Oh yes, pleaasseeee pedicure ladies. If you aren't a proficient fake tanner then avoid it - streaks and orange nails are not a good look.

Change to some summery make up, not thick foundation that melts! Oh and just because it's hot doesn't mean you have to wear stupidly low cut/short clothing.

motherinferior · 09/05/2008 13:42

Actually I have a very lovely summery bag donated by Generous and Rich Best Friend last birthday, thank you for reminding me!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 09/05/2008 13:42

Choose your underwear carefully (or at least put some on) when wearing lovely floaty white linen things.

funnypeculiar · 09/05/2008 13:43

Remember that just because it is hot, you have not body morphed into a younger, hotter version of yourself.

Anchovy · 09/05/2008 13:44

In fact you will only have morphed into a hotter and crosser version of yourself

no black bras under light tops

nothing too tight or short

No shorts/cropped trousers on men in cities, ever and FFS keep your shirts on at all times

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 09/05/2008 13:45

Never think that sunglasses look good when you are in a suit (men especially)

FAQ · 09/05/2008 13:46

sorry thread Hi-jack - DWP - I'm back home now if you still want to call

EffiePerine · 09/05/2008 13:46

and take your sunglasses (and hat) off when you're inside

motherinferior · 09/05/2008 13:47

Oh, I dunno. I think summer is licence to, you know, flash it all about a bit. (Granted, I need no seasonal excuse to flash it all about a bit, at least as far as my norks are concerned.) A general jollity is to be condoned, IMO.

DarrellRivers · 09/05/2008 13:49

lol at morphing into hotter, crosser version.
Don't wear flip flops to work please

MrsBadger · 09/05/2008 13:49

Do not wear your city shorts with trainers.

Or your Uggs.

If your norks really need a wide-strapped supportive bra, do not think you can get away with a pretty thin-strapped one. Your norks will suffer. If you don't want wide straps on show, wear something else.

EffiePerine · 09/05/2008 13:49

well, I object to walking past shuddering blobs of pale fatty blookes with their shirts off in the street

EffiePerine · 09/05/2008 13:49

oh yes, wear a proper bra (esp under a low-cut top)

DarrellRivers · 09/05/2008 13:50

i saw a lady yesterday in Uggs and jeans
she must have had such hot feet

flowerybeanbag · 09/05/2008 13:51

Don't wear a normal bra under a racer-back vest, I find that extremely irritating. Buy one of those clippy things to clip your bra straps together or wear a strapless one.

Ditto above for halterneck tops as well.

Please remember that you can get burnt the first time it's a sunny day. There are huge numbers of people walking round like lobsters at the moment as they seem to have forgotten during the course of the winter that the sun burns and have stripped off the minute it peeked out from behind a cloud.

Pinkjenny · 09/05/2008 13:53

Darrell - I have flip flops on for work today LOL! They are silver leather though. Gorgeous, I love them.

Cropped tops on ladies without flat tums.

Vests with really ugly and thick bra straps showing (I am 34F btw).

ahundredtimes · 09/05/2008 13:53

[takes notes hurriedly]

God, there's a lot to remember. I am meant to shopping for summer clothes now, but have managed to pretend to be doing something else.

Perhaps I should get my feet done first?

[takes more notes, adds summer bag to list]
