What to wear for doctorate interview

Hi everyone,

I have an interview coming up for a psychology doctorate and I’m starting to have doubts over what to wear!

I have no idea if we’re expected to dress very formally or not.. I was thinking of wearing smart black trousers, black boots and a jumper like this Do you think this is too casual?

How do you normally dress day to day. What do you feel good in?

I think what you've suggested is absolutely fine. I wore similar for my PhD interview and also for a position at the university and I was successful in both. Good luck

I would be too hot in that for an interview. Even though it’s not 100% wool a knitted high neck would be problematic.

(Personally I also would not want to have the interviewers speculating on whether I was cos-playing a TV celebrity.)

I'm going against the grain here and suggesting something more formal such as a jacket. The jumper is lovely but is too informal.

I interview students for PhDs regularly and I never pay any attention to what people wear - it’s all about the potential of their work and whether we could work together for 4 years! Your outfit looks lovely. If you’re likely to do teaching, I wouldn’t rock up in hot pants and a bra top but otherwise, universities are very relaxed.
