Help me choose what to do with my hair.

So after being poorly for a while, losing weight quickly and feeling like a perimenopausal gross thing, I’ve decided to splash a bit of cash on making myself feel better.

I’ve decided to look into highlights/lowlights/balayage but don’t know what would suit me or what I should ask for. I’ve only ever coloured my hair myself with a box dye before.

It’s very thin and fine, long bob currently parted on the side. It’s a dark brown that I do like but would like to fancy it up a bit so it has more depth, looks expensive and makes it look a bit thicker.

Is it highlights I need? I’m a bit worried about it looking stripy and 90s if I ask for the wrong thing. I also tend to wear my hair straight and worry a lot of the colour styles are suited only to curls.

Also I’m looking at ash colours but then it says they can be aging, I’m already looking old due to the weight loss and not being able to exercise so don’t want to make things worse. I’m 44 btw.

I’ll attach some photos I’ve been looking at.

It's not a very warm colour is it? Have you seen some of the stylists on Instagram where they show you what people look like with different coloured hair?

Sorry, I was just looking at the first picture.

If you have no grey, I’d go for balayage with some warmth at the ends.

Stupid question, but if I ask for balayage or ombré, would they colour my roots and greys? Or just do the lengths?

I haven’t been able to do my own hair for a little while so have some greys and roots coming through. I’d need that sorting otherwise just colouring the lengths will look daft.

I feel intimidated by salons so want to be 100% confident on what I’m asking for.

Balayage usually has a darker root, that is excellent for regrowth as well as greys.

I find Pinterest is great for hair inspiration. Maybe find one you like and take it in? They will want to do a patch test 48 hours prior so you could ask then
