What would you wear to go out for a 'nice' dinner this week?

It's my 35th birthday this week and DH and I are going out for our first meal, just the two of us, since our 16mo daughter was born. My day-to-day is mum uniform of leggings, jumpers etc. I'm feeling in such a rut. I don't have much time/money to find something but hoping you lovely lot might have some inspiration.

I think he's booked somewhere quite fancy so I want to make a bit of an effort.

So - if you were 35, size 14, 5ft 4 - what would you wear out for a dinner?

What do you already own that might work?

Personally I would wear a midi slip skirt with knee high pointed toe boots, or wide leg trousers with pointed ankle boots (or trainers, depending how dressy) and jumper, or a black mini dress, black oversized blazer and chunky loafers.

I don’t know if this is helpful or not op, but when I don’t have a clue what to wear, I always tend to think it’s a mistake to depart too drastically from the style and shapes which you feel suit you best day to day. So in other words, I go for a “posher” version of my every day look.

What are you getting for your birthday? If it were me I would be asking for a Really Good Jacket - something outside your usual clothing budget, maybe from the current Net-a-Porter sale or The Outnet, or Vinted. With that I’d suggest an inexpensive silk camisole and some pale grey jeans in whichever shape works best for you.

Obviously a bit retro! (And I’m usually the last person to suggest jeans.) But it will mean you have One Good Thing going forward, that you can pull out for any event, and two other new items that can slot into your day to day life.

I’m older but go out for relaxed meals quite a lot and would wear tapered trousers with chunky boots or trainers, a high neck top and a cardigan or similar. Nice jewellery, maybe gold hoops/layered necklaces.

It’s a date with her husband though …
