How can I stop this happening? Breaking nail.

Ok so every time my nail grows to a certain length it starts to break in the same place. It catches on stuff and I end up having to wear a plaster until it gets to a length that I can cut it off (which is usually too low and sore). I think it got damaged when I had my nails done years ago, it's never been right since. But I don't know how to stop it happening in the first place. Any ideas welcome.

Google tea bag nail repair

You are going to have to use that method for months , until it completely grows out, you are cutting the nail too soon

I had a thumb nail that had split about a third of the way down and it took about 6 months to grow out fully

You do have to maintain the repair, Id be redoing mine every couple of days.

Mine’s been doing this for years as welll, so I can’t help but can commiserate about how bloody annoying it is!

Oil your cuticles every time you wash your hands and the nail will grow in faster and stronger.

Mine do this as well. It’s annoying because it takes forever for my nails to grow back. I’ve tried all kinds of nail treatments but none make a difference. Wish I had a solution for it.

Is it the finger that pushes the button through, on a pair of jeans? My nail hates this and I've learnt to keep it shorter to stop the stress on the nail wall.

Pamelaaaaarrr · 16/01/2025 09:12

Mine does that too, always on the same finger, and I end up doing the plaster thing as well. I've started having gel nails done every 3-4 weeks now as I was so fed up of broken nails!

Prevent (supplements, oils) and Treat (as above).

I'd probably stick some clear nail polish on and hope that stops more breakage.

I'd cut the nail shorter now as well and keep ot filed to reduce risk of more snagging.

I have the same problem.
What I do is paint a thin layer of nail glue over the crack & a bit beyond. Then I either put on nail strengthener like Sally Hansen or Nailtiques. Better still I use a home lamp & gel polish from amazon & leave it on till the crack grows out, just topping off with regular varnish that can be removed with gentle remover, leaving the gel untouched.
Not perfect I know but it works for me.
