How on earth do you work out your undertone?

The only guidance I can find is to look at my veins but if I look at my wrist I can see both purple veins and blue/green veins.

I'm completely stumped. Gold and silver both look fine to me. I'm 50 so for a large part of my life silver jewellery was the only fashionable colour to wear so Im used to seeing it against my skin.

Im either an autumn or a winter or maybe a summer. Im not getting very far! Brown hair, green eyes medium contrast.

Do you look better in pure white or an off-white/cream? Could you hold an item in each colour against your face and see which makes your complexion look healthier?

And then which would be which? I mean if off white looked better for example?

If it was white then that would suggest a cool season ie summer or winter.

If cream then it suggests a warm season ie spring or summer.

I can't tell though!

Orange is a great colour to use, most cool tones look awful in it. That's how I worked out I was most definitely a summer rather than a spring

SwaylerTwift · 15/01/2025 18:02

I dont think winter with brown hair and green eyes. You're probably summer.

JustLikeThatBluebird · 15/01/2025 18:05

Could you post a picture with white and cream against your face? Anonymised of course. Or any colours you have handy would help us to get an idea.

Does this help. If you click on the photo you can see my eyes

Do you have a picture without make up? Only it’s hard to tell as a lot of people like to look warmer or cooler with their make up.

If you go to a make up counter, they’ll tell you straight away. I thought I was neutral to cool (due to my vein colour), but apparently I am warm and I definitely am!!

user989 · 15/01/2025 18:10

the colour on that photo looks completely different on my phone to my laptop!

It'd be really helpful if you could hold some fabric against your face so we can see which ones work best with your colouring.

LeaveALittleNote · 15/01/2025 18:22

I’ve never been able to work out my colour season. I’ve come to the conclusion I’m a neutral undertone, and the seasons don’t seem to take that into account.

Summer is cool and autumn is warm.
Winter = cool and spring = warm.

I’d say you are a soft autumn by the sounds of it. Maybe soft summer. The photo doesn’t really help.
If your veins look blue and green or you find it hard to tell, and both silver and gold suit you, you probably have a neutral undertone.

user989 · 15/01/2025 18:34

Literally the only one I can find with white(ish) against bare skin.

I suspect you're warm rather than cool based on the last photo but it's hard to tell. If you can find something white to hold against your face that would really help. Even better if you also have something off-white/cream for comparison. I wouldn't say winter or spring though, your colouring doesn't have enough contrast.

LoafofSellotape · 15/01/2025 18:36

Do you have any pink/red in your skin? Do you burn easily? Look crap in orange? You're likely cool toned.

Of course you might be completely neutral and look good in anything.

StrawberrySwitchblades · 15/01/2025 18:36

Yeah, my money is on Soft Autumn.

JustLikeThatBluebird · 15/01/2025 18:37

It's probably my computer screen but the towel looks beige or off white to me. I agree with the previous person that maybe you're a soft summer or soft autumn. How are you with bright colours? Good or bad? What about pastels?

user989 · 15/01/2025 18:43

Skin tans very easily. I think I look bad in pastels (although I can do a men’s blue shirt).

that towel has definitely seen better days so it’s certainly not pure white!

You could be neutral toned. I'm neutral toned and suits most colours, can wear silver and gold.

I have brown hair and green eyes. I'm a deep winter. I need blue-based/cool tones. Anything remotely warm/yellow-based looks horrific on me.

JustLikeThatBluebird · 15/01/2025 18:52

I think I'm leaning towards a soft summer like someone else suggested. Try looking up soft summer colour palettes and see if the colours are ones that work for you or not. A soft summer is cool but leaning towards soft autumn so fairly neutral overall.

JustLikeThatBluebird · 15/01/2025 18:53

My sister has brown hair and green eyes and is also a winter. She has high contrast colouring though, OP has low contrast so I think more likely to be a summer.
