Hankering after a quality straight, mid length black skirt (90s style)

I had one of these in the 90s from Kaleidoscope (I think) and so did my best friend. Quite thick, cotton, maybe a twill type of material. Mid calf I think with split in the back. Lined. Those were the days of quality... 😔
My friend and I lived in those skirts. They were so versatile and flattering. You could wear with a tshirt and trainers or dress up with a nice jumper and black boots. I've been hankering after a replacement for years. But all i can find is a polyester unlined thing from Roman which really is no good at all.
Please Mumsnet S and B...can you find me something as near as poss to my description? I'd be willing to pay up to £70 ish for the right skirt! Thank you 😊

I can't help I'm afraid but I hear you and was reminiscing about that style on another thread just the other day.

I had a couple but my favourite was from La Redoute in a really hefty navy linen (or it might have been a linen cotton mix). I'd like to find another too (although not in black) but I'm afraid the only one I've seen so far was over £200 and out of stock!

Another one reminiscing and scouring the shops for something that fits the bill. All I find is satin and polyester too.

I have a navy blue Moleskin one (I actually have two the same because I loved it so much) that I bought in Next in 1997 when I was 18. It is a bit small for me at the minute but I am almost back into it. I love it.
I also have a khaki twill one from Principles at the same time and really like that one too.

I’ve been looking for something like this too! Ideally with pockets. I know, I’m asking for the moon on a stick…

Can you find the fabric you want and get someone to make one for you? Or make one yourself if you can.

Floisme · 13/01/2025 17:32

Yeah, I've been thinking about making one and looking at a Makers Atelier pattern. It won't be cheap to get decent fabric and I'm not a fast sewer but you're right @TooManyCupsAndMugs that it might be the best option!

boobashka · 13/01/2025 21:24

Thank you all. Interesting that there's quite a few of us looking for the same thing! I'm not talented in the sewing department @toomanycupsandmugs but maybe I'll have to seek out a seamstress....

If what you are looking for is a "pencil skirt" they were the first thing we made at school sewing. They are very simple to make.

I saw pencil skirts in Next yesterday. Felt I was a teenager again, and they were actually called Pencil skirts, not a modern, new-fangled name.!.
