Struggling to find something flattering for my shape.

I need a dress for an Engagement party. Nothing too flash I don't think. I'm 50, and menopause has recently made my waistline disappear, so things I would have normally gone for no longer flatter me. I'm also only 5ft 2, so I feel a bit dumpy. Anyone have any ideas for me? I'm lost.

My sister as mentioned is 5'3 with a short waist & 31inch inside leg. She never buys trousers shorter than length 33 inches so she can wear them with heels. It's not always to do with height. Is it not better to find out the persons proportions before suggesting petit ranges.

FFS! Which bloody brand am I allowed to mention? The usual demented pile on over Cos, and now I’m accused of working for Joanie? Grin

I’m a former lawyer now in a creative profession that has nothing to do with clothes.

I have never bought or worn anything from Joanie. Indeed I only came across them on MN two or three years ago. Not my style but I’m aware they’re popular with people of a variety of sizes who don’t want to spend much money. If the OP had given a budget of £200 I would have suggested other brands.

Demented pile on? I (and as far as I recall only I) said that I thought that cos outfit was a bad choice for the op. Everyone else has agreed that I’m wrong and cos is perfect for the shorter person. I still think it’s a bad choice. But I don’t think that makes me either demented or a pile on.

Keeponkeepingon9 · 14/01/2025 15:39

I'm definitely Pilling on cause I don't agree with petite suggestions unless you know proportions 😂

No, I also called the earlier Cos links into question too because unless the OP has very long legs and arms they would swamp her. I also think there are far nicer outfits out there, but that’s subjective.

I’m not sure our joint posts constitute a demented pile on though 😂

These two Cos pieces together would make a strong but relaxed outfit. A bargain, and each piece would earn its keep over the rest of the year.

Those items are absolutely hideous 😂

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 14/01/2025 16:13

I’m five feet one and about 75% of my clothes are petite. I got sick of sleeves too long, waist to crutch too long and necks too wide. My best friend is five foot three and doesn’t have this issue at all.

I mean I do feel a bit wild this afternoon but that’s for other, non-Cos reasons 😂

Im still waiting for OP to let us have a bit more detail of what she might be looking for eg separates or dress etc.

To you but not for the 6.5 million Cos customers in the world. I don’t know what made you feel the need to declare something is ‘hideous’ other than immaturity. There are many links on this thread I think look awful but I wouldn’t say it because other people have different tastes and thankfully there are enough brands to keep us all happy.

Struggling with the love for joannie, seems like folks promoting them? Are they struggling or something,

Yes, they are promoted relentlessly on s&b threads!

Snapandfart24 · 15/01/2025 09:26

Everyone is different but when I had this problem I found the style of top with a bit of cleavage and a fitted top then looser/floatier from under the bust, and also a bit longer that belt level looked great.

They hide a lot of sins and can be quite sheer over a flesh or pastel colour tunic with a pattern or one colour but they are two layers so they don't rouche up in any creases when you sit, etc. Very flattering. There are lots of tops in all price ranges in that sort of style. I love them!

(Sorry my description is a bit pants, I don't know what that style is called! Basically the outer layer is looser than the lining part. Oof I'm bad at this! Sorry. You get the idea.)

I hope you find what you're looking for and have a great time!

I don't think I believe the bumph about "model is 6'3"

I have this dress. I'm (apparently) 5 ' 2" . It doesn't look any different on me, yet model is supposed to be 5'8"

Sister Jane

Edited

That dress is 50” long

That leaves only 12” for length of head, neck and to clear the floor

WayDownThere · 15/01/2025 21:46

Roman petite range have some great dresses to suit different shapes.

Why after posting this does everyone still think 5'2 or 5'3 requires petite length. My sister 5'3 buys 33 inch trousers to wear with heels but I suppose that's possibly an exception rather than common. The women in my family are mostly between 5'3 & 5'5
We all have long arms & legs & short waists & never buy petite. Surely we should be asking about proportions rather than assuming all shorter women wear short length skirts & trousers etc. Manufacturers should also consider this. M&S blouses can be a hit or miss but usually the arms are too short. Rant over 😅

Not sure what your point is. That dress on me comes to above my ankles, same as the model.

Escape the oppression! None of the male guests will be fussed about something new to wear. You don’t have to be either!
But if it’s willing slavery, and you LIKE dressing up, enjoy!

No ideas, but this vould have been written by me. It's awful when we seen our waist disappearing 😕 xx

RebeccaRedhat · 18/01/2025 20:47

AX Paris dresses are really flattering, and fairly cheap. I know New Look stock them for trying on purposes and next you csn order on line too. I won't buy from the shop because they charge you to return them.

ruffles1 · 18/01/2025 22:06

Im 5’2 and a size 12 and this dress is flattering ( also has pockets)

Horses7 · 18/01/2025 22:26

Definitely look at petite especially if long sleeves. Also get something semi fitted or covered with a floaty jacket. Don’t buy anything with lots of heavy material it will swamp you. Good luck and enjoy.

Erinaz · 19/01/2025 18:16

Get a dress with a empire line then some nice wedges or heels . Empire line gives illusion of a waist and is flattering. The wedge or heel if dress is long .

No muslim would be involved in grooming gangs. It goes against Allah.

It's no different to the Triple K calling themselves Christians.

These are just depraved, disgusting individuals..all of them.

Sorry to go off on a tangent but I really wish society could have an honest and open debate on why (mainly) men behave like this, and the triggers that cause them to do deplorable things.

I think it's less concerning what hue did what..Why are most atrocities caused by men, worldwide?
