What shoes for this dress?

I'm going to a wedding in mid-March and am planning to wear this Ghose dress www.marksandspencer.com/crepe-polka-dot-v-neck-midi-tea-dress/p/clp23013306?

What kind of shoes (or boots) should I wear with it? I'm 5'9, size 16, hourglass shape. The dress is a bit shorter on me than on the model (more like mid-calf than just above ankle length).
I don't really want to get heels as I don't generally wear them and I'd like to spend a bit more on something that is a bit of an investment. Happy to spend up to £200 for the right shoes, maybe a bit more for boots.

I wouldn't wear boots to a wedding. I think it'll make this dress look far too casual and almost matronly.

Id wear them with some gold block heels. Block heels are much comfier. With a gold back and a nudey brown lip, a bit of winged eyeliner and some statement earrings.

If you don't want heels I'd still do the above but with some wedges

chichiwaaa · 08/01/2025 22:02

Hi OP, I've given up on heels so tend to wear a 'dressier' flat when I can. Kurt Geiger do a lovely flat shoe called the 'princely mule'. Has a lovely jewelled band across it. I have a few different colours of them but the black would be nice with this dress. You need to size up in them.
However, I'm defo not a fashionista by any means so others may disagree!

Thanks both!

This has reminded me that I do actually have 2 pairs of block heeled sandals from Russell & Bromley, one pair gold leather and one pair black suede. I only wore them a couple of times pre-lockdown and they've been in the boxes under the spare bed ever since! I'll need to get them out and see if I can cope with wearing them for a number of hours.

Otherwise those sparkly flat shoes could be a good option! Or I could bring them in a bag in case the heels get too much!

I love that dress!

Definitely a no to boots for a wedding, it would look too casual. Just opt for a nice paid of flat shoes/sandals if you don't like wearing heels.

Velvet flats with a strap, if you're not going to go for heels - ASOS has some very pretty ones.

Sebsaloysius · 09/01/2025 17:01

That's a beautiful dress, OP!

I bought these a year or so ago for a rather posh wedding breakfast at The Savoy, and my dress wasn't too similar in style to yours. I use a mobility aid (wheelchair or scooter) and can't wear heels. I was worried I would look a little frumpy given the nature of the event and the glam set that were in attendance. But, not only were these shoes really comfortable, but I was also complimented on them and asked "who's are they dahhhling?". I was tempted to answer "mine, obviously".

I've worn them a few times since, they go well for so many occasions.

Start practising now. By the time the wedding comes around in March (I think that's what you wrote), you should be able to wear them for several hours.

Which lip? Top or bottom?

oh God you as well!! Just the one flat? Do they only make the one flat shoe do they?

HappyKatieA · 09/01/2025 19:53

Go with the gold block heels!

goodgirlclassicthing · 09/01/2025 22:47

I was at a wedding recently where a woman was wearing a similar style of dress with these shoes www.mustweardesigns.co.uk/product-page/dark-heart
They were a nice understated pretty style and she said they were the comfiest shoes she's ever worn! I bought a pair for myself on that alone and they really are very comfy. I'm a size 10UK for reference. Your dress is beautiful!

goodgirlclassicthing · 09/01/2025 22:48

Meant to add they have loads of other designs and even some velvet flats like someone suggested earlier!

PennyApril54 · 10/01/2025 00:30

Oh it's lovely! I think there are lots of styles that will go well. I love the length. You'll want something you think looks nice but also comfortable! Enjoy.

For the wedding, the retro heels a couple of pps have linked would be perfect.

I love the dress, it would also look fab dressed down with DMs or similar.

ChiaraMontague · 10/01/2025 10:42

Thanks so much everyone - lots of really great suggestions and food for thought!

I was planning to slightly play up the retro feel of the dress with winged eyeliner - not too OTT as I don't want to look like I'm cosplaying but just a nod.

I really love the dress and can't wait to wear it!

This was my thought for after the wedding, it would look good dressed down as well
