What boots with this dress

Going out into town for dinner next week, I have bought a black lace dress to wear, it is above the knee and I intend to wear tights and boots. I'm just a bit stumped as to what style boots to get. I can't walk in heels although ok in kitten heels, or should I go for a more chunky boot. I'm a petite size 16 . Any suggestions please.

Also what denier tight would you go for?

Do you have a picture of the dress so we can see the shape? The style of the dress will affect what sort of shoes or boots will look right!

Up to the knee, kitten heel, slight pointed toe ? Hard to tell really without seeing the dress.

This is the dress, it is longer on me as I'm only 5'2

Just thinking I might be chilly in shoes.

Agreed. Generally i think almost every dress can be worn with boots but that might be one of few which can't.

You could perhaps try black, kitten heel ankle boots, but that risks being a bit twee. Or I suppose Docs style with black sheer or black opaque tights, but only if you're confident enough to do it with an air of "yes, I'm wearing a cocktail dress with DMs, and that's deliberate, not because I can't think of anything else to wear"

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 06/01/2025 18:45

At this time of year unless it was an obligatory "cocktail dress" dress code if I were wearing that I'd dress it down as much as possible. Flat black pumps, or Mary Janes or flat black lace-up or Chelsea boots and black or coloured opaque tights, maybe red. No bling.

Opaque tights the same colour as your boots. If you’re worried about being cold (your boots over shoes argument), you can buy 200 denier tights.

Hayley1256 · 06/01/2025 18:55

I don't think I'd wear boots with this either. wear some thick tights and some nice heels

TooMuchDontCare · 06/01/2025 20:01

I think you could wear black opaque tights & heeled slight platform boots with that which would give it a slightly edgier look

TooMuchDontCare · 06/01/2025 20:14

Roughly this style - not these boots necessarily

I think it would be great with black tights and boots. Heeled ankle boots would be lovely with it.

Agree something like these would look great! I’d probably go for around 80-100 denier tights.

Imtoooldforallthis · 06/01/2025 22:15

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm off shopping tomorrow so will have a look.

I also think it would look great dressed down a bit with DMs.
