how do you apply eyeliner?

ive never been able to do it!i can paint with steady hand,facepaint right near wiggly childrens eyes but if i try eyeliner i look like i am odd!any tips?

I think it helps if you gently stretch the eyelid so the skin is taut, then you're more likely to get a straight, smooth line. (apparently - haven't tried proper eyeliner - just smudgy pencil). Also don't start right in the inner corner of your eye.
