Functional but nice raincoat for a tall person!

So… I’m 35yo, almost 6ft tall and a size 10.

I need a not too ugly, waterproof coat for mumming around in, whilst not looking too much like a slug. I don’t drive so am usually traipsing around for miles a day with a pair of toddlers.

Some criteria:
Long sleeves!!
Pockets and a big hood
Not too “feminine” or fitted, as the waist will be around my nipples, plus it would be nice to be able to fit the new baby in with its carrier
Not too warm (all the walking - prefer layers)
Nothing too jazzy
Budget up to £300 at a push

I’ve been considering the following:

Rains

Ilse Jacobsen

Protected Species

Didriksons

Thoughts or advice most welcome! Have read loads of threads on here but they often seem to be from petite ladies.

Seasalt Plant Hunter . I'm tall too, even the waist is in the right place,it's great.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 31/12/2024 15:44

I got a lovely long waterproof from Colombia.

CortadoPlease · 31/12/2024 15:46

I came to suggest Rains. Love the cut of them. I’m 5’8” and the long is just above knee length on me. They’re unlined though so not warm.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2024 15:49

Tall, skinny dd has a Rains one and it looks great on her. Maybe size up so you can fit a warm jumper or hoodie under?

Im 5ft 10 and still wearing a Barbour * House of Hackney raincoat from 2022 which actually fits ok
of your choices id go for the ilse jacobsen one on appearance. as a brand i think they are cut for tall women though no experience of the raincoat. Good price as per above from flannels would encourage me.

Oooh great find, thanks!

I love those House of Hackney Barbours - was dithering at the time and missed out! Do you find the arms are long enough on a Barbour? I wonder whether I’d need to size up or go for men’s.

Didriksons is the best. Really well made, waterproof and warm and also really good for tall people. It's the only brand that does long enough sleeves for me.
Seasalt also do a tall range worth a look.

MidnightPatrol · 01/01/2025 10:31

I have a longer length Stutterheim and am happy with it.

It goes to the top of my boots, and I am also tall. Sleeves a good length etc.

Very waterproof.

The barbour is a reasonable fit - going for a 12 rather than a 10 helped and the fact it’s an a line style

its very light but given the mildness of this winter I’ve barely needed a heavier coat so far this year

I have this coat. I'm 5'8" and it is very long on me. Not just the coat length, but all the proportions, including the sleeves and the pocket height. It's a very comfortable, practical coat with a lovely, dramatic swish as you stride along.

ScaryM0nster · 01/01/2025 11:34

Didriksons kids stuff is the absolute business. Not tried the adult.

Definitely suggest trying Seasalt - my torso / arms are same as 6’2 husband and I’ve got two one plant hunter and one jc overpack and both fit well. In the regular length not tall.

don’t have elastic cuffs. I live in NE Scotland so pretty demanding on a coat.

ChristmasLightsLover · 01/01/2025 13:26

Another vote for Seasalt!

BECKYBUCKET · 23/01/2025 14:03

Sleeve length's are nice and long on the Protected Species range and they are really waterproof as well and a great blocker from the wind

I have three Protected Species... more stylish, long in the sleeve, big deep pockets and are actually waterproof
