Highlights gone wrong - WWYD?

I have been going to the same hairdresser for over 15 years. It's a highly rated salon in London and costs significant money (hundreds) but it's my one indulgence. Today I had my usual appointment (colour and style) before going away to see family for Christmas. Unfortunately because of work commitments I had to leave it later in the day than normal. I think it has been a disaster- but I dont know if I am being unreasonable as I haven't been feeling well. .The hairdresser was running late - I had to wait over 4o minutes and at the end she left me with one of the juniors whilst she went to have a Christmas drink with the rest of the team. That would all be fine /understandable but the colour is awful. Literally just cheap looking strips/ blocks/ not blended. Really upset.

Please can you tell if iabu and WWYD? I am due to catch a train tomorrow and the salon is shut/fully booked til Christmas. Should I just buy a hair dye or cut the streaks out? WWYD?

Good grief, I had a half head of foil highlights, cut and blow dry today, with two nice cups of coffee and a mince pie and it was £45!

DarkDarkNight · 21/12/2024 22:58

I would send them some clearer photos as these ones are hazy/blurred (may just be the lighting) but they definitely look like stripes.

I spend a lot of money on my hair as well as it’s also my one indulgence. My stylist works one to one, I would be fuming to be passed over to a junior with the money you pay.

DarkDarkNight · 21/12/2024 23:00

Also just to note if you want them to fix it (and I think they should) don’t do anything to it like using purple shampoo. They need to see it as they left it.

Floralnomad · 21/12/2024 23:06

The photos you’ve posted here are terrible so I hope you’ve mailed them better ones . It’s nowhere near worth £500 , not sure any hair cut is , but it’s not so ridiculous that people would laugh or even mention it .

CharlotteLightandDark · 21/12/2024 23:12

I’m booked in for highlights tomorrow with a new salon I’m trying as they’re cheap and this has made me nervous! 😅🤣 I think the best thing is usually to ask for babylights rather than highlights as they’re more blended/less blocky.

I really hope you get it sorted but also it’s just hair and please don’t let it spoil your Christmas! x

Honestlyhonay · 21/12/2024 23:15

£500 - op I’m aghast!

Icecreamlover63 · 21/12/2024 23:20

I don’t think they are disastrous. I would pop to Boots a buy a purple shampoo to dull them down abit. They were extremely expensive for what you have got. Ask for some help from the salon and look round for another! Salons should really look after loyal customers

Thank you all for your advice- glad you didn't think I was just being fussy. I have emailed them and hopefully will get a response (likely on Monday). The solution is difficult because I am supposed to be going away/home tomorrow and not back in London until the new year. I am hoping they might be able to recommend a dye or something. I had lots of fun things planned for the Christmas/New Year and look really ugly with my hair tied up!

Do not try to sort if yourself … then salon won’t be responsible for the fix.
If you want proper colorist to fix, leave it for them.

MabelMora · 21/12/2024 23:34

I wouldn't use root spray on them - I use it on my roots and although it covers up grey it also leaves your hair really sticky and tacky and the colour comes off on your fingers.
Good luck with getting it sorted.

friendconcern · 22/12/2024 07:47

Dry it wavy or curl it, it won’t look so obvious, don’t try and change the colour yourself and definitely don’t cut it!

PuppyMonkey · 22/12/2024 07:53

Hope you get it sorted OP. Interestingly, I used to have my hair done like this on purpose in about 2003-2004. Those big streaks were called “slices” back then and were quite the style statement! Grin

Sayoonara · 22/12/2024 08:51

Wash it, curl it, get salon to sort it. Outrageous they left a junior to do it and still charged £500.

It doesn't look so awful family will be staring etc. mine look a bit like that but I use an £8 highlighting kit. Once washed the blocks spread out a bit and look more natural.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 22/12/2024 08:55

So who did your hair? A junior or a tipsy stylist? Neither is acceptable but charging £500 for a junior's work. You should get who you booked and they should provide what you pay for

Wordau · 22/12/2024 09:18

Looks ike they've rushed it and done chunky instead of fine highlights to save time? Really shit of them.

Hskatkat · 23/12/2024 11:55

@hairdisasterbeforechristmas did you get sorted today?

hairdisasterbeforechristmas · 23/12/2024 17:01

Hi, thanks for asking. They have been great. The salon emailed me yesterday evening (when they were closed) and said they will send a colour wash to where I am staying for Christmas. I presume that this is like a hair dye and when it is received I just put it on , leave it for a bit and wash it off? The hairdresser who normally treats me is on holiday so I wasn't able to ask her but am sure I can call them once the delivery arrives if they haven't included any instructions.

Thanks again for everyone's help and advice. I have never had a problem before so wasn't sure what to do/if I was being fussy.

Good, are they going to fix it properly when they can?

i don’t think it looks awful but it definitely doesn’t look like a £500 job. For that money I’d want an amazing job even if it meant going back

ginasevern · 23/12/2024 18:06

£500! Bloody hell.

Secondguess · 31/12/2024 23:42

How did you get on with the colour wash? I hope the salon offered to fix it once they reopen.

hairdisasterbeforechristmas · 01/01/2025 00:23

The colour wash didn't arrive until after Christmas so I haven't used it. I haven't spoken to the salon about a proper fix yet but will do once they re-open

RosesTulipssunflowers · 01/01/2025 00:44

For a hairdresser to cut corners on any hairstyle is wrong, but when you're paying an unbelievable amount, then it's even more disgraceful to do an obvious rush job (judging by the thick chunky weaves along the top) and I would be changing salons after they fix it if I were you.

There's hundreds of salons about, who will do exactly the style you want if given the opportunity. And you could easily find one who will charge a fraction of the price. How they can justify charging £500 is beyond me.

hairdisasterbeforechristmas · 01/01/2025 01:03

Thank you for taking the time to respond and for confirming that I wasn't being unreasonable/fussy. The hairdressers have normally been very good and have an excellent reputation - I think I chose the wrong time/appointment. Hopefully they will put it right but if not it may be time to go elsewhere!

DepartingRadish · 01/01/2025 08:25

£500!! What the hell are they doing for that money?? I would absolutely be asking them to put it right.

I also think it was bloody cheeky of your stylist to leave you with a junior. I know it's annoying when you're running late and it means you might have to miss out on plans. But it's not unusual for salons to be busy in the Christmas run-up so this was not unexpected.

When she's charging those kind of prices, it's extremely poor service to jump ship and leave you with someone much less qualified.

I would seriously have a look at going somewhere else. I know it's a faff trying to find a decent salon (especially colourists) where you feel comfortable and you're happy with the result, but £500 and being treated the way you were is absolutely taking the piss.
