Think glycerin is screwing up my curly hair!

After about a year of my hair changing from curly and bouncy when using my favourite Trepadora gel to going limp, straight, dull and awful within a few hours, I think I’ve finally worked out that glycerin is the problem.

Apparently as a humectant, glycerin can pull moisture out of your hair if the air is drier than your hair, or pull moisture in if the other way around.

Think this started being a problem since I’ve been getting my hair coloured - guess the colouring has changed my hair in some way (although it’s quite gentle, no bleach).

Anyway, the Trepadora gel was bloody brilliant and still makes my hair super tight and curly but like I say, the problem is it all drops quickly and goes really dry-looking now, as I guess the humectant affects my now-coloured hair. I don’t quite get that super definition and volume with the glycerin free gel I use - if I layered my glycerin free gel over the top of the Trepadora would that seal it in and stop the humectant effect? Or should the glycerin-free gel go on first as a “barrier” for my hair?

This is really interesting. I don’t have coloured hair but I wondered why my hair was going limp, straight and frizzy when all that had changed was a different gel. Lo & behold the new gel contains glycerin.

I can’t offer advice on your question OP but I would think life is too short to be layering gels and we might as well just buy a different one that is glycerin free?

@MadameBethune give it a try!! My hair has stayed curly with the glycerin free gel!

The only reason I was thinking about layering gels is because the Trepadora one is AMAZING (well, it was until my hair went off the glycerin). It really makes my hair curl so tightly - (apparently it has some ingredient that’s used in skin care for tightening and I can really feel it instantly making my hair coil up) but like I say, now it drops within a few hours.

So I just thought putting a g-free one over the top might lock in all that amazing bounciness. The g-free one I’ve found is good but just not as hard hold and doesn’t give the instant springiness of the Trepadora.
