its that time of year again when you can i can no longer hide my pasty bits under jumpers so its out with the st tropaz/fake bake/ tinted body lotion so people arent blinded by my brilliant whiteness. personally im a bit crap at fake tanning, i can never decide if i should put it on the inside of my arms and how you avoid orange knuckles!! so if you have any pearls of wisdom please share them

no idea. i used my neutrogena body lotion with tan in it last weeks. how come there is no colour on my legs, but have orange ankles?

windygalestoday · 30/04/2008 17:51

i have tried everything cheap ,expensive spray on, mousses, towels lotions potions and creams .............i always smell like a roast beef dinner

PixelHerder · 30/04/2008 17:54

It 'sticks' to dead skin - nice innit!

I bloody hate fake tan, it stinks on me even when it's REALLY diluted. I'm currently using the Dove 'gradual build up' one diluted by four times as much normal Dove body lotion, and it still stinks. Grrrrr.

PeaMcLean · 30/04/2008 17:55

Always use latex gloves cos no matter how much you think you've washed your hands you'll still have orange palms, or worse, between your fingers so you look like you smoke 60 a day.

I use Piz Buin mousse. Goes on really easily and dries quickly.

I read that you should wear the gloves, then last of all take them off and wipe the back of your hands on your bottom, which puts on just enough tan. I don't know if this works with my piz buin (will try this weekend) but seemed sensible to me. You then use the tip of your fingers to wipe down into the gaps, using a wet wipe to clean the tips of your fingers when you've finished. Mix with moisturiser for elbows and knees.

I'll tell you on Saturday if it worked or if I look like Fag Ash Lil.

The smell's not great, but I do it in the evenign then shower the next morning. Honestly, given the Ariel whiteness of my legs, the smell is the least of my problems.

lizandlulu · 30/04/2008 17:57

all the ones i have used stink after a while too. even thought they try to cover the stink with another smell.

a question i have always wondered is, if you use fake tan, or the body/face cream with fake tan, then you exfoliate, dont you just remove it all?

Cod, does St Tropez go on brown?

that's the only thing I don't like about the Piz Buin one, you can't see where it goes...

PixelHerder · 30/04/2008 18:00

Windygales, they all contain the same ingredient, DHA, which is what creates the smell - so sadly doesn't matter which one you try (I've tried loads too).

Spugs - sorry - completely neglected to pass on my 'pearls of wisdom', actually the only one I can think of (apart from the usual exfoliate and moisturise any rough areas) is to dilute the stuff to lessen the problem of patches of violent orangeness. I'm crap at fake tanning too

noddyholder · 30/04/2008 18:05

st tropez everyday airbrush is brilliant.Spray and go literally No smudges and very eralistic brown colour.

I am not a big faker, but always put vaseline on my dry bits (knees, ankles etc) before the olay stuff. That way I don't get the orange bits. Have never braved anything more than legs, though.

lumpsdumps · 30/04/2008 20:33

I'm using St Tropez Everyday and I am a lovely colour brown without a streak of orange anywhere! Everything else has always turned me orange, so gave up until Cod's fake tan thread. I'm getting married soon so don't want to look whiter that my dress. Have been asked by a few customers if I have been away on holiday it looks go good! Thanks Cod!

lizandlulu · 30/04/2008 20:41

is it ok for pale people?

WingsofanAngel · 30/04/2008 20:52

Baby wipes work well on removing fake tan from hands. Also good on the orange bits.

So St tropez is worth the money then.

I used a spray that you don't have to rub in but I couldn't tell were I'd missed til after it developed.

lumpsdumps · 01/05/2008 07:28

I am extremely pale, red hair and blue eyes. Feels nice to be brown but look really natural. I use the fair to medium Everyday stuff.

SilentTerror · 01/05/2008 09:15

I like Loreal Nutrishimmer.Alot cheaper than St Tropez.
I use a slip on glove/pad thing from Boots to apply,it really helps.

spugs · 01/05/2008 10:45

used the st tropaz mousse last night and no orange or streaks anywhere. its not very dark though so i'll have to reaply it a few times to get it the colour i want. im fair skinned as well

How funny - I used the st tropez mousse last night too and it isn't as dark as i thought it would be but maybe that is a good thing. My ritual is exfoliate like hell before hand, like Cod says strip stand in front of a mirror and work fast - the mousse dries and don't panic if it looks patchy (with st tropez anyway) it washes off in the morning
