Outfit guidance not frumpy! with running shoes

I'm late 40s and recently broke two bones in my foot which has healed but all my shoes and boots give me pain still.
I've tried on tens of trainers and shoes and the only ones that don't hurt are 3 yr old Adidas running shoe. I have them in black.

I WFH so only need casual/ smart casual outfit options usually, however we are going to PILs for early Christmas meal on the weekend.
It's usually smartish and festive.
They won't mind me wearing trainers but I want to make an effort with the rest of the outfit but don't know how to not look and feel frumpy.

Any suggestions? I'm tall, slightly overweight, usually wear dresses, skirts and tailored trousers with longer tops/jumpers and mens style jackets.

Can you wear a slightly cropped tailored trouser so it looks more like an intentional choice? You could still wear a longer top?

Are you wanting to buy something new or looking at what you already have?
