What to wear with this skirt

I bought this black satin skirt on a whim, it's not midi on me as am short, so definitely a maxi, it's super comfortable, but I have no idea what to wear with it, I'm 43, petite, flat chested, can't wear anything high neck as anything touching my throat makes me feel weird. Also feel like I've lost my sense of style since having my 2 year old. Would prefer not to spend a huge amount, £30 max, but any thoughts? www.next.co.uk/style/su516168/at6296?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAx9q6BhCDARIsACwUxu5Mo2ZovcM66XyRwr4XRtRm4CkL1RF_r3xhiB10UlsoRYygfLGGBQoaAoZVEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#AT6296

Do you like what the model is wearing on top for a start?

Turmerictolly · 09/12/2024 23:32

A mohair or short sleeved round/crew neck jumper.

TizerorFizz · 09/12/2024 23:35

I wax gojng to say cashmere short sleeve jumper. M&S have some. Or something similar. A fitted cardigan would look good too and then add jewellery.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 23:37

Have you tried it in and looked through what you already have? I don't like the way it's styled in the photos ( I could be alone with that) but I wonder if that's clouding your ideas. You might be surprised you already have something that works

Not particularly, the top is a bit short in the body and a bit boxy

No, I've been meaning to, but I don't think I really have anything that would go, if I picture my wardrobe, it's a lot of navy blue and grey long line tops or fitted black ones, and was thinking all black might be a bit much....

A good quality plain/cream white t-shirt. Nicely fitted but not skin tight.

From a different idea viewpoint, what inspired you to buy the skirt? Where do want to wear it? What gap does it fill?

(I like black & black as long as the are both the same strength of colour, but can be a different texture. This is not a rule is just what I like)

I was looking for something to wear for either the work Christmas party or when I meet up with my friend this weekend for a long overdue catch up and evening out, I feel a bit frumpy in my usual attire and have been wearing the same things for years, so was trying to be brave. Felt so lovely on and comfortable, but I was wearing a hoody when I tried it on and the tops I grabbed to try on with it weren't right, small next shop with limited options :)

you may find this interesting @annlee3817

just scroll through to see the shapes/styles and if you look underneath the vid it lists where the items were purchased

Bailiwitch · 10/12/2024 07:19

This might be fun:

Zara bomber jacket

Or otherwise scroll through all the ‘Special prices’ stuff on Zara - sure to be something perfect. (In general I’d say that sort of skirt goes with everything - so it would be sensible to do as @Wheelyfast suggests and check your wardrobe. But if you haven’t bought anything for a while I can understand wanting something new to wear with it.)

SereneCapybara · 10/12/2024 07:27

I've seen lots of women wear those skirts with more fitted short or long sleeved angora or fluffy round necked jumpers, cropped around the natural waistline. It's a great look imo and can be worn with chunky boots or delicate heels or trainers. It could also work with a vest or camisole and sheer or devoré blouse on top. (I'd post a link but the only devoré blouses I can find online are Shein, or all sold out at Soskandar. But they must be around as Christmas partywear.

This is gorgeous:

Zara jumper

Anna713 · 10/12/2024 10:26

I've bought exactly the same skirt . I'm going to wear it with a fluffy cream cardigan from Phase eight, which is a bit expensive but I think I'll get a lot of wear out of it. I've got some pointy suede ankle boots that I hope will look OK with it.

annlee3817 · 10/12/2024 18:05

Thanks all, some great ideas! Will order a few and see how I get on

I have a similar skirt, I like it with a cropped fluffy jumper I have from whistles

Tabitha005 · 11/12/2024 17:01

I have a silver satin skirt in that style and sometimes wear it with one of my husband's white dress shirts, tied up in front, and I dressed that outfit up for meeting friends for cocktails then dinner by adding metallic silver heels and a huge crystal brooch - so I didn't wear flashy earrings or anything, just let the brooch do the talkin'! Black sparkly nail polish and very old but well-loved turquoise leather clutch bag for a pop of colour.

To dress it down, I go with a very pale beige cashmere sweater and my black leather combat boots.

melmos · 11/12/2024 21:02

I do fitted high neck crop tops, knitted or cotton with leather jacket for dressing up work with either cowboy boy or high Chelsea boots to dress up

To dress down uggs/trainers and chunky jumpers then oversized bombers/flying jackets

It's my go to not raining winter pub / dinner combo!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 12/12/2024 12:04

Half the price in F&F at Tesco

LittleGwyneth · 12/12/2024 12:55

I'd wear it with a thin knit cardigan, button undone at the bottom and top.

Eekomouse · 13/12/2024 10:02

Great suggestions, I never know what to wear with my satin skirt. Is it acceptable to wear tights with satin skirts? It’s too cold for bare legs!

endoflevelbaddy · 20/12/2024 20:10

I wore mine with this All Saints oversized jumper & strappy sandals for a Xmas do last week. Think it’ll make a repeat appearance for New Years because it was so comfy
