Lands End does good quality cotton tees including in 'basic' colours (the Supima cotton ones in particular)- I've not bought men's but I can't imagine they wouldn't be at least as good as the women's.

I'm going to go against everything I've ever said here before and say - Primark. Yes. Last spring, my DH and I went on a trip, DH didn't pack enough tops and panic-bought 2 t-shirts from Primark, a plain black and plain burgundy. I just assumed they would fall into bits immediately but despite being worn weekly and tumble-dried, they have lasted so well. I had bought him some from rapanui last year, and although the cotton of those has lasted well and is thick, there is some color fading around the collar.
