Investment pieces, what would you buy?

Just that really... I need to move away from fast fashion and over buying. What investment pieces would you buy?

At this time of year: cashmere jumpers, smart boots and a good wool coat in a neutral colour.

I think most people would focus on a good coat and boots at this time of year. Beyond that it really depends on your lifestyle and budget.

Imagine, for example, three friends meeting for a casual pre-Christmas lunch in a pub on the outskirts of town.

One arrives in hiking boots and a parka, having walked across fields to get to the destination.

The second arrives in a camel Maxmara coat and black leather trousers, stepping immaculately out of her Tesla.

The third emerges from the bus in a red velvet dress and much polished conker brown ankle boots.

They may each be wearing clothes they consider investment pieces, that they expect to wear regularly for years to come.

What do you most need to dress for?

I'm early 40s working in a senior job. I think I dress well for work but maybe less so out of work!

And how do you actually like to dress, in and out of work? Do you spend your leisure time in cocktail bars or at the side of a rugby pitch? What sort of budget do you have for new clothes? What size / height are you and do you have any significant preferences or restrictions when it comes to buying clothes?

Essentially you may need to invest a little time on your thread if you want properly helpful replies …

Have a look on Instagram at capsule wardrobes... Tends to include good jeans, a good white shirt, blazer etc.

PP have asked good questions. You need to think about what your style is and where you intend to wear it. I work in quite a smart casual environment and so there's significant crossover between my work wardrobe and going-out wardrobe, but investment pieces for my wardrobe would be: a camel wool coat, a really great edgy white shirt, a black leather jacket, a cocktail ring, leather boots, cashmere jumpers with some design interest, avant garde jewellery. I have a Japanese style choker necklace I bought a good sixteen years ago as a reward to myself after getting through a tough time that I still absolutely adore, for instance, and also a black leather bomber I've worn to death to the extent that I've had the elbows mended.

A Max Mara coat (camel hair or cashmere/silk blend)
Any pieces in cashmere, vicuna, alpaca (think Piazza Castello, Falconeri, Peserico)
