Too old for a mini skirt and sparkles?

Hi, I’m off to a dinner next week, it’s just a week night dinner but the dress code is Christmas dress to impress. I am hankering after a mini sequin skirt from Next but I am 51. Can I carry it off? I am thinking a tight-ish plain black jumper, or a slouchy grey jumper with it. I am thinking sparkly tights too! What has come over me?! Could I wear this with heeled shoes? Or do I need to go with thick black tights and boots? My legs are good so I might be OK with a mini, but I have a tummy so a tight skirt will do me no favours. Advice would be appreciated please!

Are you in Instagram OP? Give @awomancalledgeorge a follow 🙂

(And no, of course you're not too old for sparkle!!) ✨

Never too old! Go for it girl 😀

It's up to you to decide what to wear
. Personally I have very chunky legs so I would wear a long skirt, however I still have decent boobs so would wear a top that made the most of them.

One thing I've learnt over my many years is that people don't really care what you wear. If you think a jumper and mini skirt would make you feel good wear it.

Still got a heartbeat? Can stand upright?

Then go for it. Happiness and splendid outfits are for anyone who wants them 🥂

I think go for it. Just make sure it’s all not too tight, it looks try hard and don’t do sparkly tights and sequins, it’s too much.

Doublevodka · 07/12/2024 10:45

Absolutely do it! You are not too old. I would wear with plain tights. I’m 51 and now think, if I like it who really cares what I’m wearing.

Go for it! Never too old

Omg just go for it - Sounds amazing but I think we need to see a headless pic so that we can advise!

I haven’t been brave enough to buy it yet!

I am at the tail-end of my 60s, and last week wore an above-the-knee kilt with opaque black tights and a v-neck fine-knit black sweater and got heaps of compliments. I am 5' 3" and longer lengths swamp me. I think your proposed outfit sounds gorgeous.

Pablova · 07/12/2024 10:51

Sequin mini definitely, personally, I think it looks better with a chunky / slouchy top rather than something fitted.

I’d ditch the sparkly tights. Sequin and sparkle would be too much.

StormingNorman · 07/12/2024 10:54

I love sequins but the length of the skirt for me depends on how old the knees are! I’m firmly in the below-the-knee camp. My friend who is the same age has ridiculously good legs and is always in minis.

If you feel a bit self-conscious about the length, opaque tights and chunky heels or flats would be your friend.

I bought one last year and got loads of wear out of it...and can't wait to wear it at Christmas's do this year. I am 52 and wore it with more baggy tops. Once with healed boots and a few times just for drinks at friends houses with flat dark converse.

My view when I bought it was it is now or never....
