What to wear with sleeveless knitwear?

What do others do? I've found a few really lovely sleeveless knitted tops this year which I love. By now it's just too cold for sleeveless though. If I wear a standard cardigan with them, it looks super frumpy. What's the trick here please?? Any non-frumpy cardis people can recommend? Should the colour match or perhaps specifically contrast? Thank you for any advice.

Any tips at all?

If you’re going to wear with a cardie, wear it matching like a twin set. Otherwise you could wear a shirt underneath (which creates added bonus of being able to layer with heat tech thermals too).

Wear it over a shirt, or fitted, roll neck top. If cardi, it can be short & boxy, fitted, long, oversized etc depending on your height and body shape. Modernise an ordinary cardi with a belt. M&S website has lots of photos of options.

Thank you, I hadn't even thought of shirt underneath. What about quite tight fitting tops though- surely that wouldn't work as well?

I like this look with the ruffled blouse underneath actually- thank you for suggesting this link.

Anything with a fancy sleeve to show, like pin tucks, pleats, puff or pleated cuffs, ties at the elbow etc.
Alternatively a smooth long sleeved cotton polo neck.

I wear a plain white shirt (with collar) or a shirt or long sleeve T-shirt under my vests

SophieStrange · 05/12/2024 12:52

Tailored shirt under a sleeveless fairisle/arran sweater is a pretty much my core autumn/winter look. Add pearls underneath if an effort at dressing up is necessary.

greenblueredyellowviolet · 05/12/2024 12:55

I can't believe I hadn't even thought of adding a layer underneath rather than on top! That makes a lot of sense. The vests I already got are all quite tight fitting so it might not work as well but I might get some looser ones to try this look.

I wear mine with pussy bow blouses or cotton shirts with collars as per the first 2 photos above

I'm so glad I stumbled on this thread, I'm actually debating the Seasalt knitted vest in the link above, as it's in the sale.
But I'm dithering on size and length - would you size up on a tank top/sleeveless knitwear if you're more curvy/fatter than slim all over, or just avoid them altogether?

Nitgel · 31/12/2024 18:02

I couldn't find anything that worked so sent the useless thing back. 😂

samlovesdilys · 31/12/2024 18:15

I wear a long sleeve striped Breton, or if colder a thermal striped top. Love this look!!

Rocknrollstar · 31/12/2024 18:35

Primark have been selling sleeveless knitted tops with shirt sleeves and collar sewn in!

LunaTheCat · 31/12/2024 19:12

I love them
i short and curvy and find dresses flattering.. they look great over the top of dresses!

ThePoetsWife · 31/12/2024 19:14

I wear layers underneath mine - t shirts - both short and long sleeved, roll necks, Bretons and shirts etc.

BCSurvivor · 31/12/2024 21:10

Do you prefer them baggy or fitted?

Me too today 😪
Got the most beautiful sparkly knitted vest and just couldn't find anything to style it with. Tried the white blouse as suggested up thread but it made me look really old-fashioned? Tried a thin long sleeved top and it made the whole look very colourful/mismatched, or too dark.
I loved the vest itself but do they inevitably look a bit frumpy maybe? (Apologies to all those who said they love to wear them- I'm certain it's just me and my sad lack of style!!)

It’s just a tank top isn’t it? I don’t like shirts much but wear long sleeves t-shirts. If the tank top is tight then I make sure the top underneath is thin material and also close fitting. I’d usually wear white underneath.
