Long hair to short- any ideas

Sick of my long hair that I imagined would be swishy and bouncy but instead is ratty, knotted and falling out in handfuls.
Thing is I'm 55 and jowly and really don't want to accentuate those. Is it poss to have short hair and look youthful?
Has anyone else gone for the chop?

I love having shorter hair, Id say go for it! I find shorter hair makes the root jump up a bit more and feels more lifted. I feel it has a slimming effect and I feel lighter and more fashionable and younger in general. Cant advise you what to get although most people should probably avoid short one length hair and going above the chin. I usually use pinterest for styles I like then show that to my hairdresser and see what she thinks

Thank you
That's exactly what I'm after- some lightness
Long hair is dragging my face down but equally I'm not good at styling
