Style mavens, I need your help with what to wear with high-waisted trousers!

I bought some very Annie Hall-ish trousers from Gap - light brown, lightweight twill, wide legs with a high waist & belt loops in the middle (so there's about 2 inches of fabric above them IYSWIM). Before you ask, YES, they are flattering & my bum doesn't look big (I'm a size 12 with a small waist - tho the trews are size 10 yay!).

ANYWAY, as it's not 1973 I don't want to actually look like Annie Hall, but after so many years of low-rise, I've forgotten what to wear with high waists! What would look good? FYI, I am a 43 y-o SAHM who generally wears boyfriend cut jeans with converse or ballet pumps, layered tops, 1950s shirts, vintage cardies - you know the sort of thing. I've got no confidence in styling myself though & am wondering if I shouldn't just take the trousers back...

A fitted blouse, or t-shirt, tucked in?

JackieNo · 28/04/2008 20:31

Kind of Katharine Hepburn stylee?

scampadoodle · 28/04/2008 20:34

Oh yes, that's so fab!

I was wondering if short, puffed sleeves on a tucked-in white blouse would look nice? (So that the puffed shoulders would balance out the hips? Not in an 80s way though!)

Lots of these look the right sort of shape.

Yes - definitely to the white blouse. Or maybe a t-shirt type thing like this, for a more casual look. Actually, that one might be a bit too fitted, but you need to play with things, I think - go shopping wearing them, and try on loads of tops, to see what works.

Possibly also a camisole with a shortish (waist length) cardigan over it - maybe one of your vintage ones. Like a twinset cardigan

More Katherine Hepburn for inspiration .

Jackie, you are a star! Those DottyP blouses look just the ticket.
Thank you so much - sorry about the slow response; I went off to make supper & watch Waking the Dead...
