I'm having a first World problem! I've got a couple of work events/Christmas parties next month. So not only am I struggling to find outfits for each occasion but I'm struggling with what to wear for shoes. I'm 5,11 so I don't wear heels. I don't normally go out so I mostly wear converse or DM's etc. I need to find shoes that don't look so odd with a nice dress. Don't know what I'm asking but anyone else tall and struggle with the same issue?

I wear the heels. But if you don't want to, how about sparkly pointed flats?

Angeldelight1555 · 19/11/2024 19:05

@CMOTDibbler How tall are you? When I was a teenager I would be confident enough to embrace a heel but nowadays I'd feel so much taller than everyone else and I probably couldn't walk in them anymore 🤣 I'm looking for a flat shoe that would go. I tend to try and wear a maxi dress that way it hides my shoes but I'm struggling with that too.

Have you tried long tall sally? They have a whole section for flat shoes in big sizes.

Have you seen anything at all on long tall Sally? They do shoes too.

I agree with the heels, its been years since I wore any but I'm desperate to wear them for a wedding soon, just to look my best. But if I fall over it kind of defeats the point. I'm going to buy them soon and start getting used to walking in them again.

What about pointed flats, there are nice ones around. Though I’ll be honest, I do think nice dresses for evening require a bit of a heel. Could you walk in shoes with a bit of a chunky heel and maybe a strap?

DGPP · 19/11/2024 19:18

Sam Endelman are very comfortable. Lots of styles on the website, including these. Also sold in John Lewis www.samedelman.co.uk/ruby-mary-jane.html?color=378

Thank you for the replies! If I was going to wear a heel it would probably be a small chunky heel I guess. I'm just so nervous about looking like a giant. It's my first christmas party at this job and I don't want to feel like I'm overtowering most people haha

I'm the same OP, I'm 5'10 and although I wore heels all the time when I was younger, nowadays I feel I tower over most people even in flats! Are people getting shorter?!

My solution for parties at the moment is this pair, which I love

You don’t give your clothing size so I can’t help with clothes, but assuming you have average size feet

Zara

has a gazillion pairs of dressy flat shoes. (I don’t quite understand why you think it’s so unusual - flat shoes have been in fashion for several years now.)

By the way - people outside the ‘first world’ can also be taller than average. And also like to choose their own clothes for celebratory events …

StiggyZardust · 19/11/2024 19:37

I have a lovely pointed red pair of flat shoes from LK Bennett. Bought them in the sale.

FixingStuff · 19/11/2024 19:41

I'm very tall but when DS started reception all the mothers were taller than me. There were really very very few women in our reception class under 5' 11". It was really strange. Normally I feel really self conscious about being tall, and that totally discombobulated me.

Preppingdonkey · 19/11/2024 19:42

I’m 5ft 10 & have no issues with heels. I think it’s hard to pull off a dress and a flat shoe but long legs help.

Preppingdonkey · 19/11/2024 19:43

@FixingStuff perhaps you have shrunk!

Splashthefash · 19/11/2024 20:20

Hi OP!

I’m almost 6ft tall. I don’t feel especially bothered about it, but I definitely did as a teenager and never really got used to wearing heels. I have a couple of pairs of amazing block heeled sandals (60cm) that were £££ but I’ve had them for years and wear any time I want a great shoe with a heel. Other than that, I mainly stick with flats. I like the satin/velvet ballet pump styles in right now - I have a really cute pair from Zara that I wore to a christening recently. If you’re wearing a long dress, then a chunky boot might also look quite good in winter!

Redcrayons · 19/11/2024 20:23

I find it hard to pull off a nice dress without heels. I have a pair of dressy flat sandals that look nice with summery dresses, but I’ve struggled to find anything for more dressy occasions that makes the outfit look ‘finished’.
My poor feet can’t cope with heels anymore.

Im 510 and I’m usually one of the tallest woman in the room. I’ve given up feeling self conscious about it, it’s not like in flats shoes, I’m petite.

Dunk19 · 19/11/2024 20:30

I'm just over 5ft 10 and wear heels, I don't feel right in certain outfits without. As a teen I was so self conscious but embrace it to a certain extent now. I don't wear really high as comfort and being able to walk are key.

CandyCane5 · 19/11/2024 21:29

I'm also tall and feel like I completely tower over people, men and women. Now I'm older I also find high heels uncomfortable to wear. I now wear a small block heel, about 1inch and think they look dressy enough.

I'm 6ft and my husband is 5ft 10. I hate wearing heels. For a recent party i bought flat silver slingbacks from New Look as an emergency measure and they were great for an inexpensive evening shoe. Woukd not walk miles or dance loads in them as they have thin soles though

Lovelysummerdays · 19/11/2024 21:35

I’m 5 11 and know how you feel. I think it’s why I used to hang out with blokes so much in my younger years. Fkk look ata are your friend I have some black velvet ones I picked up in Canada that are my go to going out shoe. I do not like pointy shoes on my size 42 feet.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 19/11/2024 21:37

@Lovelysummerdays my feet have grown to a 43 uk 9 after 3 kids! But with a long dress pointy is ok.
