Will a perm ruin my hair?

I have 'virgin' hair, never dyed or had any treatments. It's naturally very straight but I've always longed for curls. I know the chemicals used for perms are no joke, but if I take the leap will it really ruin my hair in the long run?
Do you have good or bad perm experiences?

I have had an amazing perm experience. My hair is wavy and a little crazy at times. So I had it permed for structure and it made my curls so bouncy and big. It was easy to style and easy to wash. I absolutely adored it.

modern perms are very different. I had so many compliments!

I had my hair highlighted a few times so I’m growing it out with the intention of a new perm in the future. Cannot wait. I’m in my 30s

I had it done in a salon. There’s no way I’d ever do it myself 😱

Did you get a regular perm? Or a Korean wavy perm? Great to know you are a fan!
I would deffo go to a salon and keen to find someone amazing so I know I'm in safe hands so recommendations are welcome
