Necklace for adult DS

Mountainyapyap · 12/11/2024 16:33

My ds (20) doesn't have any jewellery other than a nice watch. I'd like to get him a chain ( necklace) for Christmas but I have no idea at all what young men are in to jewellery wise. Is anyone in the know please?

Budget a couple of hundred, ideally less.

It depends on his style really. For a gift like this, I’d get his input for sure

WrongSortOfPoster · 12/11/2024 17:11

Do men wear necklaces these days?

LilacLilyBird · 13/11/2024 07:20

Has he asked for one ?

honestasever · 13/11/2024 07:24

Definitely check!
Most of the men I know don’t wear necklaces and are nore likely to wear leather type bracelets if anything

WhereAreWeNow · 13/11/2024 07:42

I would definitely ask him. None of the men that age that I know wear jewellery. He might love it but it might just not be his style. Worth sounding him out if you haven't already.

GettingStuffed · 13/11/2024 07:49

The men in my life wouldn't appreciate a necklace although DS2 used to wear a shark tooth one when he was in his teens

RampantIvy · 13/11/2024 07:56

Yes, check if he would want one. DH has a St Christopher that his mum gave him many years ago and he never, ever wears it.

I can't remember the last time I saw an adult male wearing one, apart from Mr T 😁

My 20 year old DS likes to wear a necklace sometimes. I got him one from here last Christmas www.thomassabo.com/GB/en_GB/men/by-category/necklaces-chains

MySistersCard · 13/11/2024 07:58

Definitely ask. If he doesn’t wear jewellery it may be he doesn’t like it.

MillyMichaelson · 13/11/2024 07:59

There are some cool brands that do black metal jewellery that I really like, if that's his kind of vibe

BodyKeepingScore · 13/11/2024 08:02

I'd definitely check in with him before purchasing. No men this age I know would wear a necklace.

PacificState · 13/11/2024 08:09

Both my sons (in their 20s) wear necklaces. Taste can range from pretty masculine-coded stuff (chains) to all sorts (pearls, beads, cute pendants) - what sort of clothes does your son tend to wear, OP? If he has a fairly standard young-man style (athletic clothes, jeans, sweatshirts, hoodies etc) then a metal chain would be a fairly safe bet. Something like this? (It’s quite hard to spend £200 on a chain to be honest, although you could look at antique jewellery shops maybe) www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/silver-chain-necklace-3/

My 21 year old DS wears a silver chain, not too chunky but not too dainty either. I wasn't sure at first, but it really suits him.

Most of his mates wear a chain of some description, but different ones. I think I'd try and get an idea about what he'd like - has he got a girlfriend you could ask? She may have a better idea whether he'd like something

My ds (20) doesn't have any jewellery other than a nice watch.

Then he doesn't have any jewellery. A watch is not jewellery, it's a functional item.

If he's reached the age of 20 without choosing to buy any jewellery, it seems likely that he doesn't like it. I definitely wouldn't buy him anything costing more than about £20 without checking that he would actually want to wear such a thing. You can't really go wrong with some kind of wristband - even if he only wears it a couple of times to please you, you won't be massively out of pocket. If you spend £200 on a necklace he doesn't like or want, it will just create resentment between you.

Mountainyapyap · 13/11/2024 17:21

Thanks all - i would buy it with him. I think chains are pretty popular with young guys - I was just after a steer as to what style was popular at the moment so we can have a look.

My DS 16 is after a silver St Christopher - I have compiled a small selection for ideas and shared it with him but told him we need to go in person to but it as it's such a personal thing - he was happy with that

My 19 year old wears a similar curb chain.
