To wear this in mid 30s?

I adore vintage dresses, pinup styles, etc I have since my 20s but I feel as I get older and being a mum I need to 'tone it down' a bit, I adore Dita Von Teese as she ages her style is timeless, I love swing dresses that's my go to with a cardigan. My mum said she cared less about what people think as she got older but I've gone the other way I feel more conscious, feel like if I wear anything bold I'm trying to stand out and try to appear more youthful?! I got rid of a lot of my vintage dresses after I had 2 kids, they didn't fit anymore, I've gained a new love and respect for my body now it's changed and want to start adding some new preloved vintage pieces to my wardrobe, I saw this one I've attached but feel like the print is to much for a 35 year old?! I say all this and my friend is 42 and a goth, she pulls it off so well, you will either agree with me that bold prints etc are not very becoming as you age or that I am being utterly ridiculous and to wear what I want! I'm ready to hear your thoughts on this :)

Absolutely fine, 35 is a baby, wear whatever makes you feel good

FancyNewt · 11/11/2024 17:41

35 is young. Wear what you like.

CatsLikeBoxes · 11/11/2024 17:41

Do you think that now you have reached the ancient age of 35 you must never wear anything but muted colours and only subtle patterns?
I honestly don't understand the angst of so many people fretting about whether something is "age appropriate". Do you like the way it looks? Would wearing it make you feel happy?
Wear clothes that bring you joy, rather than worrying about age.

ANagsHead · 11/11/2024 17:41

Absolutely fascinating what goes through people’s heads! I cannot think of a single reason why you shouldn’t wear the dress, assuming you think it looks good in your mirror.

GettingStuffed · 11/11/2024 17:43

It's pretty

Very pretty dress, if it suits you then wear it!
IMO more niche styles like retro or goth tend to work for any age because you aren't following fashion. You are your own style icon! 😁

Mid thirties I was still clubbing in teeny denim mini skirts and boob tubes (circa 2004)
YANBU, it's adorable 💜

Thank you for your responses. Just to say, I'm not saying 35 is old. I think I have spent to much time online with watching people's hauls and what's in my wardrobe talking about neutrals and more toned down colours referring to aging, I hear it a lot. Anyway I shall continue my adventure of finding some new pieces

Have you ever come across

Palava

@Lovetogarden555? It’s not actually vintage but has a very vintage feel, and it occurred to me their clothes might be just what you want for ‘everyday’. Have a look anyway. Gorgeous clothes, designed and made in Britain.

I know what you mean, lots of influencers out there seem to just wear beige, grey.....greige! etc. Mainly as its seen as the classy, sophisticated look.
Personally I love colour and loud prints, retro styles. Put me in something beige and 'classic' and Id just feel really boring and blank, its just not for me.

Xyz1234567 · 11/11/2024 18:57

I love that and yes, wear it!

I hope you have unfollowed them. They are not worth your time.

Hello @ANagsHead that's a brand I've never heard of but they have some lovely pieces! Thank you for sending that through

Thought you’d like it!

Babbahabba · 11/11/2024 20:25

I don't associate those styles with 20 somethings, they were really popular about 15 years ago during the rockabilly/50s styles resurgence in attentive circles. Definitely not too young for you at 35.

Babbahabba · 11/11/2024 20:25

Should say alternative not attentive.

TheOGCCL · 12/11/2024 08:23

Do you mean you are worried you’ll look a bit show offy and ostentatious? I think going against the crowd (no beige) is much more about confidence than anything else. There’s no reason why anyone can’t wear anything they like apart from their inner voice.
