Gold necklace for DD - where to get something nice but not too expensive?

Hecatoncheires · 11/11/2024 13:59

May I please have your recommendations for where I can get a gold necklace for my DD? Nothing too outrageously expensive (£150 max) but something that won't turn her neck green and won't break the first time she wears it. It's been a long time since I bought any jewellry so I'm out of touch. Thanks for any advice.

BRENNMORE - Etsy UK This shop have some lovely pieces at different price points (and have 20% off at the moment too)

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 11/11/2024 14:16

Alex Monroe might be good, I know many of his necklaces are in this price range. Monica Vinader is worth a look too. Liberty will turn up quite a few pieces too.

Happy shopping

Missoma might be an option also?

loropianalover · 11/11/2024 14:29

I’d go to a local jeweller.

I do like Missoma also.

mochimoons · 11/11/2024 14:51

I really like Hey Harper and have one of their necklace sets, also a hoop earring set. https://heyharper.com/uk/en/collections

I get loads of compliments on them and they are a good price for the quality.

I also like Missoma - I have some of the Lucy Williams collection pendants and also get lots of compliments on those.

I would be horrified if someone spent £150 on a necklace from Vinader or somewhere. It's worthless once second hand.
OP didn't say her DD's age or style, but her budget would get her a 9ct gold necklace.
I'm not a jewellery snob and wear a snake bracelet permanently that cost £35 from Abbott Lynn. I've had it over a year on my wrist and never remove it.

I use permanent hair dye and Tretinoin my hands every night! The bracelet still looks brand new.
I'm about to start decorating so I'll take it off for that as I don't want paint on it. (Then spend a frustrating 15 minutes trying to get the clasp done up.)

Modern jewellery doesn't go green, but names like Vinader are marketing miracles.
2 years ago I bought an MV layering chain for £150 as that's what my daughter asked for. Last year I bought her a 9ct snake choker from Etsy for not much more.
There's some gold necklaces here.

I wouldn't buy gold-plated as a gift to last. That rules out Monica Vinader and most of the other suggestions above. The plating will rub off, exposing the silver underneath and it will tarnish.

Gold filled (rolled gold) is far more durable, but you can give a lovely solid 9ct gold necklace for £150. Solid gold's waterproof and never tarnishes.

For best value gold, either buy vintage or from a jewellers' supplier like Cookson Gold. This chain's £82.15, here are their gold pendants and they even sell the gift boxes 🙂

DD is 16. She currently wears an old 9 carat gold locket of mine from when I was her age (when she's not wearing fashion-stuff that makes her neck go green). She'd like something fairly simple, like a heart or a star pendant. Nothing huge but something robust enough to be able to keep it on without worrying that the chain will break.

I like pawn and antique shops. I’ve found some absolute bargains. You have to be able to read the stamps, know the price per gram for different carats of gold, and have a good sense of weight by holding it. It helps to also know a bit about vintage/antique jewelry and potential value above and beyond the base gold value.

TrashPandaTime · 12/11/2024 00:00

@Garlicpest i certainly haven’t looked at all their necklaces but the first necklace I looked at on the Monica Vinader website was gold vermeil. Gold vermeil is thick(ish) gold plate over silver. Gold fill is just gold over a metal, usually brass, so poorer quality albeit it’s not the super cheap stuff.

Vermeil lasts a decent amount of time in my experience. I have a missoma gold vermeil necklace I’ve worn nearly every day for let’s say 7 years, and it hasn’t tarnished at all.

Ditto plenty of hoops earrings.

@Hecatoncheires if you can wait for the Black Friday sales then missoma, Monica Vinader etc will have decent enough discounts.

I've also been eying Edge of Ember but haven’t bought from them yet.

Garlicpest · 12/11/2024 01:02

@TrashPandaTime, just a quick response as I'm sticking to my recommendation for 9ct gold in OP's case.

In the US & UK, gold filled has to be at least 5% gold.
Gold vermeil has to be gold plated to min 2.5 microns.

A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre.

On a 1mm metal thickness, then, gold-filled will have approx 25 microns of gold coating each side.

That's ten times the thickness of vermeil.

The gold layer is bonded to the underlying metal, usually brass, using intense heat and pressure. Vermeil's electroplated. I'm not a good enough chemist to state whether one method bonds more securely than the other - but I do know gold-filled is coated with sheet gold (solid), while electroplating is done by passing an electric current through a solution of (powdered) gold.

I'm not knocking vermeil - It's pretty and affordable. Just being a details bore!

Thank you! I love MV and needed a gift for my god daughter's birthday. You've saved me £20 GrinGrinFlowers

Farmgoose · 12/11/2024 06:50

Thanks to OP for starting this thread. My DD wants same for Christmas. Definitely real gold and same budget. I didn’t have any luck at the 2nd hand shops and really appreciate the links that have been shared.
DD wants a little sun or North Star type pendant. Might get the basic chain linked above and try and find the pendant elsewhere.

Wtfppl · 12/11/2024 07:24

d Louise and hey harper are gold plated on stainless steel, lifetime guarantee against tarnishing. cheap but good option
